Here is a proof of a job I will (hopefully) get to do early next year. They have a fleet of about 20 vans/lorries and asked me to do a new design for them. They won’t change the existing ones but as new ones are bought, they will transfer to the new design.
I hope they like it enough to get the go ahead !
I will have to buy the images from Corbis to use on this design, so they should be really sharp quality wise.
Just have to decide whether to print them myself on the edge2 or sub out to large format supplier – i’m not sure on this yet though.

    Very smart mate.. Nice one.
I like the images along the bottom.. Nice touch, the vehicles should be very distinctive out and about.. 😉 😀

    Constructive criticism..
This is more a matter of self-preference rather than anything, but..
I feel the details on the cab of the truck are too large.. I always make legals addresses etc 1 inch high.. The name reduced a little also..
I think I would reduce the name on the side a bit also.. keeping it right justified.

The sprinter is very smart also..
I think I would make the legals left justified like the above truck.
The tel numbers and web etc I think needs reduced and spaced more.. or something to break them up a bit.. at a glance it appears as one line of text..

Are those images all joined by the lilac shade?
Why not using a band of lilac vinyl and print each image on its side using your edge. That way you will get it in one piece.. Would you not?

    Rob,

Thanks for the ideas to improve the design – does this look better ?
I have shown the other side of the lorry as this dosn’t have the side doors in and it looks less cluttered as a result.
I agree about the size of the door info and have reduced it accordingly.

The images at the bottom on the sprinter are 350x400mm and 400x470mm on the lorry so I’d have to have a join in all of them 😕 I’ve tried reducing the size to 300 but it looks too narrow then. They were originally supposed to be separated by bands of various pastel colours, but I think due to these being awkward to source in vinyl I will just stick with a single shade (probably lilac) to tie in with the purple of their name.

I think it will have to be large format printed to be honest – which is frustrating having just spent 20K on the edge but there you go !

    Thanks,

    Nigel

Thanks for the jiggle about mate.. the spinter does look better.. nice one.
I see what you mean on the other side without the door. It does look better.
The only thing is.. I feel its very close to the rear and the top.. but, because of its size if you moved it down and in it will (a) hit the door or look wrong as its almost in the cntre.. not sure that made sense..

If your happy with it mate.. leave it.. just a self preference I think.. cracking livery none the less.

Oh one other thing, on the rear.. would the images not be better below the details rather than inbetween?

Ok ill shut up now.. 😳 😆

Nice looking design, but I’d be a bit concerned with the images along the bottom edge of the Sprinter. This is where all the road muck ends up on my van, so it could look like they were selling dirty veg! 😕

Really nice design Nigel, vibrant colours on both vehicles that should get it noticed! I’d have to agree with Martin about the images being in the area that gets most dirt, more on the side of them being damaged rather than dirty. Are you laminating/covering them with any sort of protection or??

Good to see more of your work though Nigel, you do some cool stuff! 😀

    Cheers, Dewi

Thanks for the advice/constructive ideas. I agree about the images getting a bit of road grime thrown at them, but two things make me want to not worry about this too much-
    1) To move them would require a major redesign 😥

    2) This customer is very good at keeping their fleet clean and tidy.

Dewi – I think I have almost decided to get these images printed on an arizona machine onto cast white vinyl with a 50mic clear cast laminate. This provides a fairly conformable and long life print which is abasion resistant too. It just means I can’t use my edge which is annoying !

Nice design Nigel, as Robert has said the back of the lorry might look better with the veg lower like on the sides. The other thing is why have you left the rossette and strap line off the side of the lorry? It fits well in the panel on the sprinter and there is a large space on the side of the lorry where it would fit, just to help keep their livery more uniform

Ah yes Martin, I’m not sure why I left that off actually – I think it’s because I did the layout in such a rush in order to get it over to the customer for approval (believe it or not they wanted me to do three of these between tuesday and friday last week) having still not ok’d the artwork by thursday I breathed a sigh of relief and told them it was a January job !
Anyway, here is a revised layout for comment….

looks great mate.. dare i say you move the main name higher on the rear. 😮 😆 😆

brill stuff and thanks for sharing.
you should be able to print the rear and the sprinter prints on your edge will you not?

Love the simplicity of your design Nigel,
Very easy to understand, even without reading the text.
The font used for “E Sidwell”, what would it look like, if you used a font that had more of a uniform stroke,
maybe something like Avant-Garde or Arial. (Just a thought)
Where did you get the Pics From? I was quoting for a job earlier this year for green grocers who wanted pictures,
but I couldn’t find anything suitable.

    Simon (& others)

Thanks for your comments, unfortunately I am stuck with the “Sidwell” font as it has to match their other stuff, so I’ll have to leave that as it is.

The images will come from http://www.corbis.com/ they can be purchased separately for about $30 ea or they do compilation cds for about $400, but I will choose from the individual ones. You can also use http://creative.gettyimages.com/imagebank/?country=gbr to get a good selection of high quality images.

Rob, the images on the sprinter are 350x400mm so I can’t quite print them on the edge 😡 but I could do the rear smaller ones I guess.

Just got the go ahead on this job today. They haggled me down on the cost I quoted though, final job on the truck is going out at £570+vat. I am charging separately for the image purchase which cost £320 for the eight images. Although this was a learning curve as I bought the cheapest resolution image they did which was “640k”. I thought a 640k JPG would possibly just about do for this job with a bit of resampling, but when I downloaded the image it was only 22k 😕
I rang and complained, and they said 640k is the pixel dimension in photoshop not the file size !! After a bit of a discussion they said they would send me what they call 14mb images (normal cost £130each) on cd foc – phew that was close to being a disaster 😆
Sending the images off for printing onto cast white vinyl with a cast laminate today – will post a finished image when I done !

    Good work Nigel,

How can a 640k image turn out be a 22k image, sounds very confusing to me.. A bit like ordering four pounds of apples and ending up with half an apple.
If I ever get a green grocers to do , I know where to come…(at a second hand rate of course) 🙄
look forward to seeing the finished job.

    Simon,

No I don’t understand really either ! Fortunately they have sent me the 14mb images now which are really good sharp images. I guess I’ll just worry about that next time i need more images.
I thing I’d be on a bit of dodgy ground as far as using these images myself for any other jobs since my customer is the one paying for them, so they have the “licence” to use them but I don’t without either their permission or buying them again – bit of a shame really !!

(?) Signhere – dont understand your post I’m affraid – is there a bit missing (?)
