  • Differentiate between 3D architectural illustration and rendering?

I often hear people refer to 3D architectural illustrations and rendering as the same thing, but I think they are different. From what I gather, 3D architectural illustrations are closer to concept visualization. They depict design intent, tell a story, or convey schematic ideas. Rendering indicates photorealism and representation of materials, lighting, and details exactly as they show up in the real world. Companies such as Geoshot Technologies offer both 3D Architectural illustrations. Are you someone who likes to use illustration in early design phases and then use rendering in final presentations?

That’s a great question! The key difference is that 3D architectural illustration often focuses on the artistic and conceptual side, presenting a vision in a stylized way, while rendering is more about photorealistic accuracy and technical detail. Both are valuable in architectural illustration design, depending on whether the goal is to inspire creativity or showcase realistic project outcomes.
