  • Design work charges?

Posted by Cookster on 28 February 2005 at 10:05

Been doing some design work for customer so far spent around 28 hours over the last 3 weeks, he’s happy with the designs but not sure what to charge as we haven’t done this before. I was thinking somewhere in the region of £20-£25 per hour is that fair?

If he had of gone to a graphic design company I’m sure it would have cost a lot more.

Please let me know what you think?

    Cheers

    Hi John,

To be honest the going rate is on average £20-25 per hour. As long as your client knows you have put the hours in and knows your charges it should not be a problem. Most large design companies will charge £1000’s to design a new company image.

    John,

Is there supposed to be an attachment of your design work on this post??? It’s not there if it is supposed to be??

£20-£25 an hour is more than reasonable for design work, but you may come across a problem when you’re billing your customer. I could be wrong here, but usually prices for design work are agreed before you start work, cards on the table sort of thing, so the customer doesn’t get a nasty shock once you’ve done 28 hours at £25 an hour.

Since moving into signs, I’ve found it increasingly difficult to justify artwork time to customers as there seems to be so many signmakers that ignore that aspect of the work when invoicing. Head to head with another sign company, if I quote over £100 for designwork and the other company doesn’t, I lose, they gain 😕

Out of interest and hopefully not being too rude, but what have you spent 28 hours designing?

    Cheers, Dewi

    Sorry no attachments.

Dewi the time has been spent designing 10 kiddies T shirts which are going to be mass produced in India or somewhere, they all have a theme such as Little Angel, Daddy’s Girl that sort of thing, the company I’m doing the designs for are selling them in there own shops and are also hoping to flog them to other shops as well.

    Thanks for your interest

Design work… most designers i know charge around £40 -50 an hour, but that is stated at the time when they meet their client for the first time.
my friend works up the city of london, that design firm charge hundreds of thousand for there designs, and from what I’ve seen when they were revamping an existing clients logo, it looked virtually the same just different colours..
If he’s getting them printed in the thousands and selling them in the 1000s then a design bill of a £1000 is not a lot, also is he buying the sole use of your designs, don’t forget your designs could become world famous, where would that leave you??????
