Design Help: Boy & Barrel swing sign
Posted by Stephen Ingham on 21 June 2012 at 18:09Hi all, can anyone help with a little advice please.
I have be asked to design a swing sign board for an old english pub that has been under going a full refurbishment.
The only thing that remains of the old swing sign is pretty much just the hanging bracket.
I have to admit i have never done anything like this and was hoping someone could help?
I have made a start….the pub is called "Boy and Barrel"
Any help or advice is much appreciated

Hi Stephen, is that image one the customer gave you? Also, what colours do they have on their letterheads/bus cards?
-
its a traditional sign mate, you need traditional colours and fonts.
as Lorraine says, is this the image the place currently uses? -
Hi thanks for the replies.
Unfortunately the customer hasn’t been able to supply us with any artwork, they just seem to think we can magic some up….and the pub is being refurbished so no letterheads etc.
below is a picture of the old sign, although it is a little worse off now…
Any idea where i can get a similar image?
Any help is much appreciated

If I saw that sign on an old pub I wouldn’t even go in.
Just do a Google image search on traditional pub signs for some inspiration.
I have a link but it’s too long to post.quote :Unfortunately the customer hasn’t been able to supply us with any artwork, they just seem to think we can magic some up.This is YOUR JOB as a signmaker.

Hi Jill thanks for the reply.
I have spent hours so far searching for anything that resembles the original image with no success…
I just have no idea where you would get such an image, even if it had to be purchased…
cheers

You could always hire someone to redraw the original as well.
-
Cheers for those Jill.
I don’t know anyone who could redraw the original, plus i would guess a half decent copy would be needed to start with to be able to reproduce it…which doesn’t exist.
I wonder where i may be able to get hold of a copy of the original image, it does look like it is printed and not painted, so any ideas where i might ask…?
cheers

What is the budget Stephen? A good artist would only need the photo you have to reproduce it but it would take a bit of time. Suppose they want it yesterday for £100 :lol1:

If it is still a Tetley Pub, perhaps they may have something on file
-
Well, looking at Google, Tetleys brewery now belongs to Carlsberg, so you could try asking them if they have an archive of old signage?
Otherwise try improving the image posted and print. -

Good spot, thats the actual pub, or did you already know? 😳
-
Hi Guys, thanks for the response.
Glen i have to admit i have never been in there….
That is amazing David, how the heck have you done that….i need some tutorials i think…..i would never have been able to do that…
-
Pay David for his image, change the bottom text color to white with a nice dark brown outline and there you go.
-
That sounds like a good plan Jill.
Can i purchase the image from you David?
How much and how do i pay you?Cheers

Thanks for all the comments. I will have to email the image to you Stephen, it is too big to post on here. You were lucky, I found the original image on a pub history website I think within minutes. A bit of perspective change and rubbing out the lines. It is really not very precise but at that height you might get away with it. Used Jills idea of colour on the bottom letters, they are part of the image so can’t do much.
I presume you can do the Tetley bit, or whatever the Brewery is now.
I couldn’t really charge you anything, it may not look good enough when printed.
If it is okay for the job, drop a fiver in a charity box for me please 😉 -

David I think Stephen owes you at least a gift certificate for a nice dinner somewhere.

There’s something very effeminate about the man in the middle, and he’s wearing a girdle! 😀
-
Had a quick go, pinched the picture kevin found and same with a picture of a traditional sign, sampled some wood straps, joined them up for backing and just arched some text. not keen on the text as the whole thing had to be distorted to fit the sign blank, but at least gives another idea for Stephen to consider.
-
I like that image much more than the wasp-wasted man one.
Text looks a bit wonky off to the side like that though.
:lol1: -
I really do like that Robert, it looks great.
Thanks for all the help and input from everybody.
Cheers

quote Robert Lambie:not keen on the text as the whole thing had to be distorted to fit the sign blank
yip, i agree its distorted Jill. the arch didnt work well due to egg shape and also the last letter being an "L" but couldnt be bothered persisting as its only a bit of fun/help.
it went further wrong because i had flattened it in photoshop and deleted the working layers. "then" had to use the flattened layer and distort "again" to fit the sign blank space available. 😕 :lol1:all just a bit of fun though and as said, it is really just to show another twist on it. 😀
-
Hi Stephen, any progress on what you did with this sign?
-
Hi David, sorry i completely forgot about that…yes i used the image you created for me and the customer was happy that we were able to replicate something similar to the original.
I donated £25.00 to Marie Currie, i hope that is okay?
Cheers
Stephen -
Hi Stephen, yes, that is great thanks. 🙂 glad you could use it.
