  • Design Advice – Number of revisions

Always looking to improve how we do things, a few jobs have highlighted where we’re loosing time & money.

99% of the time, we can accurately guess the time it’ll take to design a job from the initial discussions with the customer, most know what they want.

Then there are those who can drag it out, with multiple revisions, I got to 10 the other week

I know some companies provide x revisions, then make a nominal charge for each revision there after.

Is this something you do? If you do how many revisions do you provide?

Of course, it will be discretionary. It should certainly help focus the customers mind.

Might even start charging storage, when customers leave their vans with us for days on end  (can you tell it’s been one of those days 😆 )

saying you’ll do something and implementing it are very different things! I know everyone says don’t do a thing without a deposit but I think that’s a little hard to do. Joe Bloggs the builder may well have £500 in his pocket with your name on, if you don’t give him a rough idea of what he can have, he’s likely to wander off!

Personally wherever possible I will sit a customer down and at least get something started on the screen, getting an idea of what they want and how they want it, Ie. throw an outline on screen, chuck some details and colours around.. I don’t always have time to do so but I find a much better conversion rate that way… had a guy in earlier who I spent an hour with, yes I could’ve lost that hour if he walked away, he still may, but I’m reckoning that hour has just turned into a £900 van job! Had I done him a proof just guessing things, I reckon it would’ve been the same.

I usually just tell people that artwork is £40 ph, on a decent job like a van we will gift 30mins for a rough draft, after that it’s the hourly rate… the better an idea they can give me on what they want (colours, wording, logo, even pics of things they like) then the lower the design cost will be. That usually focuses people.

    I’ll follow this with interest!

We try and gauge the customer. We do our damndest to get a deposit regardless… we need to draw the line somewhere at times.

Today’s example was 250 letterheads, that we were going round & round in circles with, not enough money in the job to warrant the time.

We’ve kitted out our meeting room, to enable us to sit down and do designs with customers… we actually struggle to get them through the door, the usual they’re too busy. Need to push it a little more I think.

I’d rather spend an hour with a walk-in that 20mins on a web enquiry!

I know what you mean about wasting fine in small orders, I try to ensure they know right away what the design fees are!
