  • Cutting Dibond on site!

Posted by Warren Beard on 4 July 2007 at 09:00

    HI Guys

I will be fitting a Dibond tray this weekend and have just found out that the customer has attached a cable up the wall where the tray will sit. The problem is the customer is 90 miles away from me and can’t tell me where on the wall it is so I will have to cut the wooden frame and Dibond tray on site.

What is the best method to cut away a small piece of Dibond out of the tray (about 20mm X 20mm – Tray and frame are 120mm deep) I’m sure some sort of saw will do the job but would like to draw on anybody who had done this before for advice.

    Thanks

Depends on the diameter of the cable, but I would drill a hole near the edge of the return, then use a fine tooth saw, hacksaw or fret swa to cut to the hole.

Jig saw will do the job nicely. Just make sure you have access to power.

The cable will be tight against the wall I take it? Drill it. Just be careful, drilling close to the edge might be a bit awkward. Also, take a hacksaw and a jigsaw with you, oh and a file in case you need to tidy up the cut.

I think I would just try & make a couple of straight cuts either side with a hacksaw & bend the little lug into the box

    Hi Guys

Thanks for all the responses, yes it is attached to the wall so has to be a cut out piece.

I will have access to power so will take my jigsaw with as well as hacksaw.

    That should sort me.

    thanks again all

I have cut Dibond with some metal shears before, no power required nice clean cut.

After 20 years spent fitting signs for a living I would agree with glen ….just two small cuts either side of the cable and bend it back with pliers into the box.
If you start dilling its easy to run off. Remember ! …Measure twice – cut once.

Just forgot to add….put some silacone mastic around the opening after, just in case the rain runs along the cable and drips inside eventually rotting your bottom timber.
