Hello everyone. My first newbie question… 😳

I have been using my new plotter the last few days with some nice results, but most of the letters I cut are not fully closed. It’s as if the knife stops just 1.0mm-0.5mm away from completing the cut. This doesn’t present a problem when weeding large letters, but with most of my text I cut being less than 1 inch, it’s difficult to weed without some letters pulling up.

All of my graphic work is done in Corel X3 and then copy/paste into the cutting software. I used Artcut that came with the plotter but this program was brutally unfriendly to use, so I purchased Signlab. Great program, but I still had the same issue. Is there some overrun setting or anything I can adjust?

    Thanks in advance!
    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,

What Make of plotter are you using?

Most have a setting for blade off-set, normally the factory default should be ok, it is dependent on the type of blade in the machine as to the amount of offset that is needed.

Off-set compensates for the distance the blade tip is from the actual centre, its needed so the blade acts as a castor and rotates when changing direction.

    Hope this helps

Another thing to check is that the blade is able to spin freely in the holder in order to cope with sharp directional changes in the cutting path.

I had a similar problem with my Cadet. See other thread

As Peter says, most likely to be a blade offset issue, but this has to be used in conjunction with cutting depth as both will affect the point at which the blade cuts the vinyl.

Most cutters will have a facility to check the offset and dial in the best value for the depth being used, but if you want to be really fussy (and we often cut text down to 2mm height) then you will need to change this for different material thicknesses. This will also often need adjustment with blade changes to correct slight variations in the grind angle etc.

I use Artcut. I had this problem also. Go into your Cut/Plot screen from the file menu. Click on setup at the top right. My plotter compensation parameters are as follows:

    Untick Close
Tick Sharp Angle – Use 0.4mm in box
Untick Max length of each plotting
    Plotting accuracy = Middle
    Delay = 0ms

    These work for me.
