cutter suitable for garment printing?
Posted by Nigel Armstrong on 30 March 2006 at 21:17Hi
Can anyone advise on what I need to create numbers and logos for heat pressing onto sports shirts.
At present I just buy in what I need, but I want to expand this and have more control in house.
I have a heat press and am considering buying software and a cutter and would appreciate some advise before buying. Thanks
Nigel

are the graphics for a shirt about as big as you will ever need cutting?

Hi Robert
At the moment I print football shirt numbers, sponsors, initials etc
I probably print about 50 – 100 garments a week
I would like to progress to printing coloured logos and badges were I currently use embroidery.
xpres and Magicut have a system were you can import a jpeg, print it onto a special peel paper then contour cut the badge using a cutter.
What do know of this and is it as simple as they suggest ?Nigel

Hi Nigel,
I have experience of both the Xpres (Ultragraphics) system and the Magic Touch. They work in similar ways, as you described. One gripe is that it is a little complicated to produce logos with multiple, unconnected, parts. Another is that when pressing on to sublimation printed football shirts, the logo substrate will sometimes allow the shirt colour to bleed through (the red on Prostar striped shirts is the worst).
You should make your own choices but I find an A4 printer for your selected method and a 24" cutter with registration facility does most of what I want.
Good luck

Hi Andy
Thanks for the advice.
The same problem happens when printing numbers on stripes Magic told me to use flock to prevent this.Magic have their own software and xpres use corel. which would be the easiest to use?

quick reply…
if shirts etc is al you need cut and the like… ide suggest the craft robo. it will contour via reg marks etc it will cut like a normal cutter. however, its limited to A4 prints, contour cut. but WILL cut bigger length wise when used as a vinyl cutting plotter. comes in at about £350
personally, if i were you ide go for the smallest of sign making viyl cutters on offer from graphtec, or the like. (i say graphtec as thats the cutter i use) anyway… they have a small 410mm sign making cutter. retails about £840. going this route gives you a fast, accurate and a proper cutting plotter that allows your business to venture into signwork should you feel the need. -
I’ve not used the Magic Touch software but saw a demo once and was impressed with the trace facility. I use Corel 12 and love it. There are lots of discussions around here about which graphics pack to use. My choice would favour one of the industry standards rather than a supplier’s own package but, again, your choice.

Not everyone wants flock logos or numbers!
