  • Cutter Memory. Is it important?

Posted by Robert Neill on 21 January 2016 at 22:13

    Hello….quick question.

Is cutter memory important, tell you why. My brother bought a Gcc sable cutter and it is ok cutting small decals. But as soon as he goes to cut anything large or intrecit it cuts about half it and then just stops….would this be to do with the memory of the cutter. Or does it sound like a software issue ??

    Regards

    Robert

page size is probably wrong mate. it might be set to cut something like the width of the machine by 2 metres.
soon as your graphic exceeds that length it won’t cut it. just go into the settings and change the length to say 10m long.

    Thanks for the reply Robert.

But not sure it’s that. He says that’s it will cut something long as long as it’s just maybe a simple silhouette or some text but as soon as he tries to do something with more detail then that’s when it stops half way

    Hi Robert,

More details may help us to think: what model is your GCC, how much memory it has?
Also, did you check the specs, what is the max length it can cut?
Memory can play an important roll in cutting large or very detailed graphics.

I have bad memories regarding cheap vinyl cutters. I bought a Graphtec, it just works, any file.

    Regards,
    George

This is the issue. 500kB is almost nothing, complex paths or long paths means large files that will overload cutter’s memory.
It says it can cut 3m tracked but what that means? Straight lines, intricate designs? They don’t mention.

You will need to break your design in 2 or more parts and cut them individually but this will cost you time. Loads of time.
Also, see if you can find a way around by using a different software or reduce the baud rate to limit the stream to the cutter but I don’t think this will solve the issue.

If you cut large/intricate designs and you don’t have time to mess around, you need to buy a proper machine. It comes with a price tag but it will run your business.

    Take care

Cool thanks George, I will say to my brother and get him to return it.

Is it dieing at a certain length , or in mid cut in a less than 3 meter cut?

I would say it is communication? What software are you using to send it. Its probably timing out.
The plotters buffer is full. The software is trying to send more. The software may be set to time out if it cant send after say 5 seconds. Look in your softeware and see if you can set the USB timeouts to infinite or retrys to say 5 or 10.
You should be able to send 500 Billion bytes to the cutter no problem so long as the cutter and software handshake properly. If its using a windows printer driver, look in its properties for timeout settings

A gerber HS15 has only about 2000 bytes of ram but you can still sent a gig of data to it.

Ye as I am still doubtful that it is a cutter issue as why would the likes of Grafityp sell such cutter if they could only cut wee small things, that doesn’t make sense to me.

Sorry also its Flexi 10 he is using.

Have you spoke with Grafityp about this ? Might be that you can increase the memory size which would be the easiest way to sort the problem. Frank is spot on it’s a communication issue & is more than likely caused by a time out error. Increasing time out settings will probably cure the problem.
Is it a direct USB connection or is he running through a USB converter ? It can sometimes be caused by the USB converter if that is how he has it set up.

It’s a direct USB connection he is using. Or was using as he has now returned it to the chap he bought it from and luckily got all his money back. So lesson learned I think.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys….I appreciate it
