custom shaped signs/Plates
Posted by Caroline Ingram on 31 August 2007 at 20:33Hi,
I have had a customer request 80 signs, well actually, number plates for really old cars, but they are not the usual shape and I was wondering is there anywhere I can get them made ?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on what you call "old" are you looking for pressed type plates? or raised numbers, either way have a look here
http://www.classicplatesonline.co.uk/
gives you the types available

hi Caroline,
if you’re looking for the pressed type, as used on old yank cars, try ‘states plates’, they’re a retail firm, but may well do a trade discount, a google search should find them, either that or grab a copy of ‘classic american’ magazine, they always used to advertise in there,
otherwise, if you’re looking for perspex, then there are a number of suppliers who’ll cut whatever pattern you send them, i’ve used GDI in uckfield, east sussex, not the cheapest, but they’ve always been quick when i’ve needed them to be. there are others i use, but the numbers are down the workshop.

Hi,
Sorry I can’t upload a picture, but what I am looking for is a plate in white, around 7 – 8" long, 6 " high, and out of the top if it in the center an oval shape.
They want it in a light plastic material, about 1.5mm thick.
Does it make sense ?

i’m sure one of the plastics retailer could profile cut it for you of you sent them the shape as an ai file, does it need to be reflective ? if not, then a white perspex/acrylic material should be ok, you can post a picture in the design help section i think.

Hi Hugh,
Stupid question, do we have any plastic retailers here ? They want them by the 12th of September.

i couldn’t tell you that to be honest. a bigger sign shop could prob help if they have a big router or laser cutter.
harry cleary might be able to tell you. he’s around somewhere !

Is this like the shape you are talking about

That is exactly the shape I am looking for, I only realized last night I need 160 of them not 80 – there are 2 sets of plates for each car 😳
I will give them a call Monday morning.
