Creative pub sign wins inn award

A Pub has won an award for its hand painted sign of a Carry On film star. The Black Horse, in Iver Heath, has been awarded the Inn Sign Society’s sign of the year award for 2012. The sign, hand painted by Rob Rowland from Creative Signs, in Chipping Norton, shows the late Sid James as Dıck Turpin in his 19th and final Carry On film, Carry on Dıck, which was filmed at nearby Pinewood Studios.
The Inn Sign Society judges on aesthetic appeal, a new ‘take’ on an old name, local distinctiveness and decorative frame appeal. Tony O’Neill, from Hall and Woodhouse, which owns the pub, said: “We believe that a good inn sign is the sign of a good inn, so we’re delighted to have won this award and to be recognised for the creativity of one of our signs.
“Inn signs throughout history have often sought to be amusing or humorous, which is why we felt that British icon Sid James riding a black horse was a perfect way to continue in this tradition and pay tribute to a great man.”
