    Creating a fade in SL 7

    I really should know this by now, but I have forgotten how to create a fade effect. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I’m sure I have done it before, really easily.
    Any help more than welcome, thanks

    select the object then click on the little pen symbol in the toolbar on the left
    choose gradient fill an bobs yer uncle,
