  • Covering office walls in Digital Prints?

Posted by Stuart Whitehouse on 5 July 2007 at 18:14

    Hi all

I’m planning on covering the walls of my office in digital prints, a bit like wallpaper.

At the minute the walls are a little bit rough – i think its just a painted office wall.

I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of preparing the surface for the prints to stick better. i thought of just painting it all in gloss paint but thought i’d ask on here if anyone had any better ideas.

    many thanks

    stuart

Why not mount them on boards and add framing moulding……that way you can change them round when you are bored, plus you wont damage the walls beneath………..

yeah I did think of that but one of the walls has a raised section and a few switches, fuse boxes etc… so i decided it’d be better just sticking straight to the walls.

i was hoping there might be some kind of paint that leaves a smooth, easy to stick surface

fill any old screw holes and make it reasonably smooth, cover with a smooth textured anaglypta wallpaper and then put your digital prints over that.

don’t print it on vinyl, print it on banner material.

take a strip of facing/skirting wood and screw it tight along the top of the wall.

if you don’t already have it along the bottom of the wall run a length along the bottom.

hold the banner up at the top of the wall and run a row of staples along it.

now at the bottom, tugging gently down on the banner staple along the bottom.

fitting takes 5 minutes at most. you now have a perfectly flat looking digital printed wall.

i know you may say "but my wall is 20ft wide."
in that case before you hang the banner, down each side, run a strip of double sided tape. as you hang each banner like wall paper just peel back the d/sided tape, overlap and join… giving a perfect finish.

i did this a about 6 months back in our work. works a treat and is easier, cheaper to produce and gives a much better finish.

I like the sound of that Rob, kinda like a flex faced banner on your walls.

    Got any pictures?

    hi paul
yeh that’s exactly it mate… that is actually what i did in our showroom im putting together (if i ever get round to finishing it) :lol1:
the picture below isnt the best as its taken from inside the reception office. but you can see the back illuminated wall?
what i did was i used two x two wood batons and screwed to the ceiling with one and the same on the floor. i made it about 8inches from the wall.
the reason for this was to allow me to screw some OLD fluorescent lights to the wall. 6 in total along the wall. i then printed onto back lit banner material and rigged the fluorescent lights to the lighting so when you turn the lights on in the work the wall illuminates also… its pretty effective and hides an old rough stone painted wall behind it…
its actually going to be changed as it was thrown together to hide the bad look of the wall when we began changing the offices around…

10 out of 10 for that one Rob. Great idea, I can see me suggesting something like that to the Mrs when it comes to decorating 😀

You shouldn’t show me things like that Rob. You’ve just upset my plans for this place. Love it mate! 😉

That’s brilliant! I especially like the backlighting idea. So many terrible walls need never be seen again.

    Well done sir.

or PVA the wall and apply vinyl with a scuff resistant laminate…….

    Cheers

    Nice job Rob 😀
