He may be the oldest sign-writer in town. But it did not stop an art group from hiring the services of Grappenhall man George Maddox. The 88-year-old came out of retirement to pick up his paintbrush for the first time in 20 years last month to complete work for Warrington Art Group. He added: "I set up my own business G &M Maddox Decorators when I was 24 but I hadn’t done any sign-writing for years when I was asked by Warrington Art Group.

"It was great and I’m quite pleased with it." Last week we reported Orford dad Carl Tickle, who was currently working on the rain covers for Wimbeldon, was one of the last remaining traditional sign-writers in Warrington. Mr Maddox added it was great to see the tradition continuing.

Way to go George. Splashing paint on letters is good for the soul.

wonder who is the oldest, if not Geroge. Do you know anyone as old within the Letterheads group or anywhere for that matter Duncan?

I had the pleasure of meeting John Jordan (below) before he passed, really nice guy and a bit of a character. anyone know what age John was?

    Well done George! 😀

    Thats some achievement
I used to have a guy work with us installing signs, he would keep up with any of us on site and out in all weathers etc – we finally reluctantly forced him to retire at the age of 83 – he is now 86 and has got himself a van doing freelance neon repairs etc and we make him an occasional fascia which he installs

Arthur Corbett used to do the odd signwriting job for me until his mid 80’s
Loved signwriting and didn’t want to hang his boots up
Suffered from a stroke and that sent him spiralling downwards
Sadly passed away last March 2014
