  • Could a faulty encoder strip/sensor stop heads firing?

    Hi All,

I’m trying to eliminate all the possible reasons of my printhead (DX5) not firing,

I’ve read through other posts and searching google that the encoder strip can affect print quality as it tells the head where it is on the media, but wondered what the effect would be if it was not being read at all?

Could it tell the printheads to not print at all?

Sorry if this is a basic question, it isn’t to me as I’m trying to learn as much as I can!

    Any help would be appreciated!

Not as far as I know Sean, not 100% sure but think it is to do more with printhead positioning rather than actual control of ink.

Yep, a faulty encoder sensor can stop ALL colours firing entirely. I’ve seen it a few times on a JV3, at least once on a JV33/CJV30, never on a Roland from memory. I would try taking it out and cleaning it first. Then try adjusting it so it reads a different area of the strip, if not replace it.

Thanks Stafford, I’ll try that, luckily I have a spare encoder strip and I’ll take out the sensor to see what sort of state it’s in.

No probs. It is more likely to be the sensor than the strip though from experience.

Let us know how you get on….
