    Hi all,

    corel draw 12. XP pro

been having a few probs these last few weeks,

A short while back i was having the occcasional prob with the pc, corel in particular kept crashing and the A.R.M kept destroying stuff.

thinking it was a memory thing (been getting the low memory warning too) i decided that since the only part of the pc not changed was the ram, i went from 3 gig ddr2 to 4gig of ddr3 and duly installed with no probls,

corel however, did not improve and then there were issues with winplot etc. ultimately I saved workspace and had to do a full re-install -several times- of both winplot and corel, I was unable to reset the workspace to the saved version, couldn’t find it!

so, recent problems which are still occurring… ram seems ok now, still the odd go slow mind, on some things the ddr2 was quicker!

every time i open corel, it has reset to -almost- a default workspace and i have to shift the toolbars about, even though i have saved workspace, maybe i’m doing it wrong?

it is now holding the two colour paletts i use (rgb and cmyk) ok, as well as the winplot tab is no longer vanishing.

font, however, are beginning to be a pain, in recent weeks i’ve had to download a number of fonts, some paid for, others just freebies, installed and used them ok. when i’ve re-opened the artwork -after a restart- the fonts are no longer there and fonts are substituted, as the fonts are saved in another file i drop them back into windows fonts folder… only to be told they’re already installed but, corel is not picking them up 🙁

    any ideas please?

    thanks,
    Hugh

Hugh, after you’ve saved your workspace do a F8 restart and accept factory defaults, continue using Draw to see if it behaving more as expected. If all is ok import the saved workspace back into Draw.
Fonts – are you using Font Navigator which came with Draw? If you have reinstalled the OS font navigator needs to be installed again as well. When you run FN it will pick up the fonts on your system and put them in it’s catalogue. Draw can be set to use the catalogue to load missing fonts when cdr file is opened.

could be a dodgy font screwing up Corel…. i am not sure.

i dont think its hardware at this stage.

    thanks guys, i’ll try that,

to be Honest Alan, i’ve never installed font manager, well, i vague recollections of it but i don’t recall using it in the last few years, i’ll dig it out again.

i did wonder if the standard drop down font list could only hold ‘so many’ fonts? i’ve deleted about 200 fonts i never use now anyways, been meaning to get rid of those "it looked good at the time" fonts for ages!

i’ll see what happens after a f8 restart,

    ta.

I wouldn’t claim that FN is perfect but that saif it does work quit well with Draw.
eg, font is on system but not actually installed.
On opening a cdr file with a missing font a dialogue box will appear basically telling you font is not installed and offering to install for you automatically. clicking on ok will intall the font and file will open.
The dialogue box will also offer the option to substitute the font for something else.
If you run FN you get the normal 2 panes, all fonts and fonts installed, you can drag fonts from one pane to another. This basic font management ensures that hundreds and hundreds of fonts are not installed (as opposed to present on system) which can cause overall system instability and sluggish performance.

    hi Alan,
my dialogue box only offers to substitue the font, not install new fonts.

the fonts are there in my fonts folder, just no longer showing in corel12.

    cheers,
    Hugh

Hugh, 1st ensure FN is installed and has been run, (under programmes) you would have been prompted to let FN catalogue the fonts on your system.
    From Corel
tools – customisation – expand the text option and click fonts
Ensure ‘Use font navigator catalog on open’ is checked, also ensure font list contents have the required settings.

    Hi Alan,

font navigator is active within corel / checked as you say above,

i’ve reset corel, auto panning is now accurate again -was all over the place before- and i need to re-install wimplot,

    fonts are just as before.

the system shows the fonts are in there though the original files are now just showing (in my download folder, not font folder) the file as an unrecognised program icon rather than as a TT or whatever font file, not all are showing like that and they’re still not in corel either!

thanks for your help and patience, i’ll have some more time later on it.

    HI Alan,

just had a look through the three corel discs and font navigator does not appear to be there as a stand alone install / program on the discs, in fact, i didn’t find it at all and, as i though, I assume it’s an integral part of draw 12’s software, i’ve never had to or been asked to load it separately, it’s just always been there in the tool bar… a drop down menu containing all my fonts which previews the selected text in a small box.
