Corel 12 and windows 7
Posted by Chris Theakstone on 9 November 2010 at 20:01Hi all,
Treated myself to a new laptop which came with windows 7, I installed Corel 12 and all my fonts from my desktop PC and all seemed fine. I then opened a file which uses a Type 1 font (eurostile) and it was blank !
Now the odd thing is that in Word the font appears and can be used but in Corel it is listed in the drop down but has a blank box where a sample would be.
I have re-installed everything, searched the web (including Corel knowledge base) and have tried the suggestions of installing the font through Font Expert with no sucess.
Problem is i have a lot of work for a regular repeat customer that uses this font.
Any ideas would be greatly apreciated.Chris

Hi don’t know if this will help but try it it might with text selected text toolbar then writing tools then sub menu settings and make sure you have the relevant boxes checked although i will add i have a similar problem with a few of mine but nothing serious yet touch wood.
Regards
Dave
Ps got the font here working on win 7 and using corel 12 if you need it in a hurry -
Also just remembered in the control panel on windows 7 if you scroll down the fonts in there it dosen’t put a lot on but will tell you there installable may be another thing to check still loving windows 7 generally but it hates a lot of fonts i’ve found it really has slowed corel down!!!!!!!!!!!! You may find you have more success with fonts if you use Font Navigator that came with the Draw Suite and within W7 had fonts to install as shortcuts. This has worked well here with X4 and X5 although I can’t be sure regarding V12. V12 is quite old in the scheme of things although a very good version, X3 was an improvement and X5 is the latest and uses the advantages that W7 can offer.

Thanks Alan and David, I have tried the font navigator that is with Corel with no luck. The fonts are there, they show in the font folder and can be used in Word but will not appear in Corel. If I select all text and change the font the letters are there but any Type 1 font is invisible.
I have even run the compatibility program which allows you to run older programs in a "virtual XP operating system" this didnt help either.
All of the above has been learnt from the net as I am no computer buff.
Would be easier if I could convince my customer to change his font (not likely after ten years).Chris

I use hundreds of type 1 fonts here so I know it’s do-able, look to the fonts as shortcuts and that may help, failing that Corel had fonts in both type1 and TT so try installing a TT version of the font.

Alan,
Not sure what you mean "look to the fonts as shortcuts". Strange thing is all the type one fonts work in other programs, they appear listed in the font drop down in corel (without an example in the box) but any work I open that used them is blank. I can select all text and change to a different font and the text appears, so it is there, but just not visible if in a type one font.
Tried a complete re-install with no effect and am now searching my fonts discs (why do we buy so many font discs ?) for the TT version of Eurostile bold.Chris
PS I didn’t really need a new laptop but it looked good !! -
Chris did you check the corel text settings?? there are umpteen options to check there

Bitstream equivalent of Eurostyle is Square 721 and I’m pretty sure that comes with Corel. Substituting the font may help you out.
Regarding font shortcuts:
search for font settings and tick ‘allow to be installed using shortcut’ this assumes the font is on the computer.

Alan,
So am I right in thinking that I should un-install the type one fonts from the windows font folder, put them in another folder and then install as a short cut in the fonts folder ?
Looking at my XP system I see all the type one fonts have the little short cut curved arrow symbol on them (haven’t a clue how this happened as I would have just installed them as any other font. Many thanks for your help.

Not sure to be honest, I tend to have Windows fonts in the fonts folder and because other fonts have come from another computer as I upgrade systems they go in another folder and I install via Font Navigator BUT from Windows (7) using the shortcut is enabled.
Incidentally wherever you fonts are when you run FN for the first time you would have been prompted to allow FN to catalogue all the fonts on your system, you can rebuild the cataloge just look to the help section in FN.
Another reason for fonts not to show in Corel is that you have the same font in 2 differnt formats ie Eurostyle Bold is installed as Type 1 AND True Type/Open Type if this is the case uninstall one and restart Corel it should show then.
