OK here I go, Im messing about with applying vinyl to stuff trying to teach myself some basics. I’ve been practising on my car and was sticking some to the door, when I came across the circular key hole…argh. Almost immediately I had ‘ribs’ everywhere. So simple question and top tips on apply over something like that? I was going to cut around it when it was on, but I’m guessing thats the wrong way to go about it.

Is it to just plan stuff properly and include the cut in my design? That is some very precise measuring though, doesn’t leave much room for shifting aboot.

Arghh again, such a newbie!! 😳

    Thanks to anyone who replies!

not a bad question at all mate.. to be honest you have to do as you said. apply over it while trimming around it.
if applying a band of vinyl say 6 inch wide & is passing over the key hole. you have enough vinyl to pass right over it. once done you can heat it to shrink the vinyl into the shape of the keyhole and trim back. its easier that way, (heating it i mean)
this type of thing is exactly were the video demo area will come in handy.
its very hard to explain properly but showing is much easier.

if you apply over areas like this wet you will have bother. 😮 avoid wet application at these parts of a job at all costs. 😉

regarding cutting away areas in design?
well it can be done, but i would only go to this kind of bother for the fitting of a fleet of vehicles. & yes, it doesnt leave much margin for error.

the safest thing to do is try and design around the key holes and handles keeping as far away as possible. well within reasin i mean 😉

HI IF like me your trimming is suspect then i cut some polo mint type circlesabout 3-4 mm thick the inner hole the outer size of the key hole
lookes neater than a opps! ive practiced this many times and still cant get it just right first time

I have, on occasions, used one of those compass-with-a-blade in it gizmos. The trick is to offer up the piece you are fitting and mark where the centre of the key hole is, cut it out and then apply. Also I have made paper templates, on site, so I can cut handles out of stripes before fitting.

Much the same method as tiling a wall really. Sort of.

What Robert says is the way to go. Cover the vinyl with app paper, apply right over the key hole, shrink in and cut back. Do all of this dry & clean. Unfortunately, its one of those things where there is no substitute for experience.
