    Hi everyone,

I’m sure you will all agree with this – I’d like to know why on earth none of the foam board suppliers can come up with a basic range of coloured foam panels that are uv resistant for several years.

Forex used to say "longterm exterior use" but have withdrawn that statement. What’s the matter with these people? Vinyl can last 10 years, and it’s basically the same substance, so why can’t they put the same uv chemicals in foam board?

Acrylic lasts 20 years or so…..all we want is a few years on foam pvc.
If one manufacturer did it, they would sell tons and tons of it. We’ve got 2 big jobs on needing acres of vinyl flood – it would save so much hassle to use coloured foam.

    What do you all think?

    cheers,
    Dicko

Every supplier I speak to insists that Fomex is for Interior use only & is not guaranteed outside at all.

It used to be a problem, but seeing as DiBond/Renobond etc is almost as cheap, lasts for ages, doesn’t warp or crack & comes in better colours, everyone seems to use that instead. I do – much better.

its not only the colour that goes… the material warps and goes very brittle. if you have a big order, speak to a good supplier of the likes of Alucolour, rynabond or dibond. you will get them down in price for a bulk delivery. ide imagine by the time you coat the foam in vinyl, you will save very little on material and labour costs as opposed to just buying it in ready cut?

are the signs for outside and how are they being fixed?

I’ve always found that flood coating white foam in a decent 5-7yr vinyl works out about the same cost as buying coloured foam…which I haven’t done for years as there’s no point.

It also gives a gloss face, any shade, UV stable, doesn’t harden or deteriorate in the sun.

Like Rob, if it’s a big job (worthwhile order) and I can use a stock colour, buying in ‘di-bond’ precut can be nearly as cheap and gives a better quality, longer life product.

Well, i see your replies……they are for outdoors in existing panatrim frames which I put up 11years ago. It was white foamex then, lasted all this time although past its best now.
The price difference per 8 x 4 sheet is more than 3 times for alucolour compared with 5mm foam. OK, the vinyl flood costs a bit, but it also makes more work, and we’d have to add 3mm strips to the ali panels to stop them rattling around in the frame, so there’s pros and cons.
I just dont know why they can’t put uv factor into foam board.
The silhouette 10mm with black core is great for thicker panels though.

    cheers

Ahh.. Panatrims. Yes, I always use 5mm gloss foam for these too, but always buy it in white & flood coat it.
