Color Printer/Plotter Advice
Posted by Bryan Cabrera on 19 July 2005 at 19:56Hello all.
I am starting to research some color printer/plotters for a future purchase. Signwarehouse sells a 62″ PrismJet/Graphtech FC5100-150 combination. The PrismJet is actually a Mutoh Falcon Outdoor with their label on it.
I like the idea of having a cutter separate from the printer but I don’t have any experience with large format color printers, so any comments would be helpful.
Thank you,
Bryan

Bryan-
I looked at that combination and it would’ve been somewhat cheaper than the Summa DC3+ I ended up with. I finally decided on the basis of 2 things – 1- I liked a dry transfer mechanism rather than liquid ink, and 2- I was limited in space and already had a vinyl cutter (VE Lynx 24″). I’m pretty happy with the Summa – although I am still learning it myself – I saved a bunch of money by upgrading my VE LxI software instead of buying a whole new suite to run the Summa. ($169 instead of $3-5000). Good luck to you with your search!

It is a rebranded Mutoh Outdoor Eco-Sol (which I am willing to live with). I know I will have to purchase a laminator with it as well (I am eyeing the ezy taper).
I have to figure out how much it costs to operate now, I see that you can get prints wholesale pretty cheap ($4.50 – $6.50 sq. foot). I am sure I can get some wholesale work as well as I work full time for an ad agency but have to determine if it is worth it.

Bryan,
Where are located? I tried two wholesalers for prints and the one i’m using is great. (in PA.) About 6-7 bucks a square foot for 3m controltac – laminated.
They also do Sanblasted and carved foam for me… Pretty much anything.
I recently quoted a carved sign with my wholesaler supplying everything including the post, and I was 1000 under a local sign shop that would have done it in house. (They are a big shop with lots of overhead) -
Hey Steve,
We are running the sign biz out on Long Island, NY but I work full time in Queens.
Thanks,
Bryan

No I don’t use Beacon but I will look into it. We use S & F who is on Long Island so we get quick delivery. Also use Signwarehouse.
BTW are you still looking into the Mutoh Outdoor?
Let me know when you make it into the city. Email me bryan@detailsigns.com
