  • CNC Router bit suddenly plunging into material – help please

Posted by Dave Rich on 26 September 2014 at 15:22

    Hi All

Our brand new (5 months old) CNC router has a recurring fault where it runs fine then suddenly, and for no known reason plunges. This happened alot 2 months ago, we were told to replace the handset which we did. Problem seemed to go away until today when it has happened 3 times. It goes from say, 3.5m to 30mm, straight through the MDF bed.

The machine is a 8×4 Sparten from Radecal.

    Any thoughts appreciated

    Dave

is it when you are running a file or at idle, is it the same file?
I am presuming it as a DSP controller and you use it with usb key?

if so check that the cable that feeds it is not near any power cables as this can cause problems although the cables are normally shielded also change to a different usb key has some work better than others.

I loaded a 16gb into my DSP controller and it freaked out wiping out the internal program

Let us know how you get on

    Hi

5-months old? I’d be straight back onto Radecal, surely its a warranty fault?

What Kevin says makes good sense though.

Check the pulse equivalent setting on the Z axis hasn’t changed if the DSP is resetting.

    Cheers

Have you looked through the code for anomalies in there?
I dont know what code your router uses, but most are quite easy to understand. My shopbot will say something like MX, 1200 which means MOVE in the X direction until it reaches 1200mm.
If you find a spot where the z axis is moving around 3.5mm and suddenly changes to 30mm , you may have found the spot, and it is your code generator that has a problem, and not the machine.

If this was an AXYZ, i would check all bed sensors, on the AXYZ is a plastic cap and this sometimes comes in contact and breaks causing the sensor to stay on, this on startup of the AXYZ causes the head to plunge into the bed!

Something similar happened to us on our CNC (imported)…

The Z axis would intermitently drop while it was working.. transpires that the stopper at the top of the z axis had dropped and was stopping the head from completing the up process before moving onto the next cut.. hence the plunge though the material..

Have gone around the rest of the machine tightening it all up and haven’t had a problem since. touch wood!!

    Good luck
