What are you making up Derek?
I use the Metamark Clear Static Cling.
I leave the liner on until it hits the glass to keep it as clean as possible.
I add letters in reverse on the back.
I then flood coat it if a coloured background is required. I do the flood coating wet.

Not sure there is anything more to it really.

A basic static cling sign will stick pretty easily without any special knowledge, flung on almost anyway, as these are the sort of signs sent out by retailers for there untrained staff to put on.
However if there is a flood coating on the back a better result is achieved if the glass is cleaned and I usually put them on wet with a film squeegee for a more even finish.

    Hi all thanks for replies
Just an update done two stores
First one dry this is iun branded cling prett thick went on quite well but dry but you could see marks where squeegeed on and any dust etc because of the static jumped on for a ride

Second one did wet and went on fine no problems

Will do wet next time so much easier and quicker

    Thanks again
