    Hi All

Not something I get involved in a great deal but have a potential client who came to see me with a van whos rear chevrons are deteriorating badly and need replacing.

How long do you estimate this would take to strip and whats the best method to tackle removal.

Where is best to source the replacement chevrons kit

What would you guys charge for this, its the time factor thats hardest element of pricing for me.

Thanks in advance – John 😀

I get the kits from WM Smith. Apply a markup (e.g 50%) and add on two hours labour to cover fitting.

As for removing the old chevrons, make sure you don’t get caught out. Some of the reflective vinyls are very brittle and are virtually impossible to remove as they break up into small bits. Ask them to remove the old vinyls themselves or offer up an hourly rate and explain what the issues are with removing certain vinyls. You won’t actually know if it’s a problem or not until you try and remove it.

I would go along with Phill on the hourly rate, been a few posts on here where people have had real problems removing certain brands/types of reflective. The yellow looks like it has already pretty much fallen off but none of the red seems to have come off so if I was going to try and test an area for removal it would be the red.

Pretty much guarantee that red will be an a*se to get off. Definitely an hourly rate or ask them to bring it in clean. They won’t. They will spend 20 mins trying to get a tiny bit of reflective off and bring it to you!

The Wm Smith kits are good as they are fully made up when you get them, so you only fit each panel area, not each individual stripe (which is how the kit in the photo is done). I would say 1.5 – 2 hours tops to fit the kit once the doors are clean.

Get someone else to do it! Failing that, its just the usual methods and patience. I have found some reflective comes off OK if you get it really hot, but with some that just makes it worse. You won’t know til you try. We use tar remover and a plastic razor scraper for really stubborn glue, and isoprop for less stubborn stuff.

Some people suggest using boiling water or a wallpaper steamer stripper but never tried it myself.

    hourly rate on the removal.
buy from william smiths and double the price.

it looks like the red is not conspicuity but i could be wrong. if its cheap engineering grade you could be there a while. alternatively, buy one of these from jag supplies. they do burn out fast but i did see them using them on thick 3m diamond grade at sign uk some years ago.
