Channel to Dibond sheet
Posted by Tim Cockings on 4 October 2009 at 19:01What is the best method of fixing channel to dibond sheet? I have been using pop rivets but of course they can be seen.
I have tried to source soft aluminium countersunk rivets with little joy.
I am sure there is a double sided tape out there and a suitable glue but not sure what they are and who supplies.
Can somebody please point me in the right direction.
Thanks.

We use countersunk rivets for this application. Your local fixings and fasteners supplier should be able to get you some.

Thanks Guys
Glenn. Very informative link and Eamon you have restored my faith in countersunk rivets. Believe it or not i have asked in my local fasteners shops and the staff didn’t know there were alternative rivets to pop rivets. Will look further afield.
Thanks Guys

Hi
the problem with counter sunk rivets & Dibond or any ally composite is that there is very little surface contact left which can cause the rivets to pull through. You may find it best to use an adhesive/tape as well as the rivets.Kev

I normally use a VHB tape but what you have to remember is the Tape is bonded to the surface of the substrate. And if that is a painted or powder coating, the bond is only as strong as the paint or powder coating bond to the surface. Hence – a few pop rivets in addition to the VHB tapes lets you sleep a bit better at night 😕

Like Phill, I always use VHB tape and then also put a few countersunk rivets along the length just to be safe.
If you are doing any work on public highways it has to be done this way anyway. -
Rivet’s on their own just don’t give me peace of mind with composite board. in fact, even though we do use it in this way, I’m not keen using composite board for channel and post signage, i prefer aluminum.
We do allot of channel and post signage and i have saw a hole bunch of signs needing re-done due to the rivets being pulled through the soft face of composite board and these were NOT countersunk rivets.
General signage on channel we will put 4-5inches of vhb tape behind every rivet, even with aluminum. purely belt and braces exercise, but a necessity for composite if situated out in exposed areas.Give Nigel at (JIT – Just in Time) a call and explain i have asked you to call regarding VHB tapes. Explain you have a painted composite board being adhered to sign channel, but specify if your channel is coated or mill/metal finish aluminum as this dictates the type of tape you should be using. state that you are a UKSG member to gain your discount. however, he will contact me to check you are before despatching.
Full details on opening accounts with JIT will be loaded in the UKSG members section within the week.

Thanks for this info Guys
There is some useful information here particularly to possible failures which obviously need to be avoided.
Rob thanks for the contact, Nigel. I will give him a call, & let him know you put me onto him and get the right VHB tape.
