  • CARWRAPS – Tuck or don’t tuck?

We recently bought the DVD’s from Real Wraps where Justin Pate gives his own tips and insight into wrapping. This guy is really fast and has some great tips. But he doesn’t tuck in the print vinyl into complicated indentation (such as wheel sections, door handles and so on), he firmly believes that you don’t need to do this if you instead cut a "perfect" and symmetrical cut. According to him it’s time consuming and the customers eyes won’t notice if the cuts are symmetrical.

So my question for all you "wrappers" out there, Do you take your time and do the tuck or do you just make a symmetrical cut an continue?

In my years as wrapping, in my case it depends on the client i am working for.
I personally prefer the wheel arches to be wrapped, but you do have to make sure they are very clean and free from oils, wax etc.. as this causes big problems later on.

I also dont like to see the colour of the vehicle underneath unless it is the same colour print as the vehicle colour.

Aso i fill in the handles where i can, this again depends on how fussy the client wants to be, and i try to avoid cutting on a vehicle if poss but i know that this is not possible sometimes.

    Hey Simon,

I learnt a lot of stuff from the dvds.

I don’t usually wrap under the wheel arches or right under the body of the car.

I rather have my wrap stay on then start failing. My first ever full wrap which was my own car I can see where the problem areas are. These are usually the ones Justin patches or leaves.

In his training videos I think its a bit unfair because the wraps are usually a background colour with a pattern so its easier to find a patch. If your doing a full photo in a wrap it might be a bit harder to find a patch unless you know before hand and print a bit etc.

I do like the way he cuts his vinyl into smaller sections especially on bumpers etc. I do the same and the client can never tell. I’ve attached an image of a bumper I did in 7 pieces of vinyl. No stretching at all and I probably fitted in a quarter of the time if I need to heat it up. So I know its going to stay put in terms of trying to stretch back.

I’ve used both methods, but I’m starting to prefer the cutting instead of tucking.

Do they ship the DVD’s to the Netherlands too, don’t see them in the country list 😥
