Card Payments, new CCD thing?? Evalon
Posted by Hugh Potter on 12 August 2019 at 14:30Had a phone call from Evalon who are my card payment processing company, foreign guy as expected and said they need company information to update things regarding new money laundering nonsense, however, upon receipt of the email they’re asking for the following…

Surely they’re not expecting me to supply sensitive information like that, via email? It has to be a scam right?

ps, I’ve emailed and told them as much… I know they have my name and email but come on…!!

I would say it looks like a scam. More so if you have just cut and pasted it as the e-mail address to send it to has some of the letters transposed to look like an Evalon e-mail but probably isn’t!

My mistake.. the company is Elavon, not Evalon as i suggested, though they can still whistle for it!

Any chance you’d send them to me too?
Looking to buy s laser cutter 😉 -

I have contacted Elavon directly regarding this email, incredibly they are telling me that the email is genuine and that they require the information to update records.. I politely told Carol-Ann that I won’t be supplying what is essentially enough info to obtain credit cards and open businesses / accounts in my name, or effectively close my company down!!
They can have whatever the find on Companies house, and that’s it.

Quite right Hugh – I’d have done the same. You can’t be too careful these days, we’re surrounded by sharks.

Just find it … well, I don’t know.. incredulous that they’d ask for such information.

Just had my call from Elevon asking for everything but the inside leg measurements Hugh, was interested to know if you gave them the information required or cancelled the service?
I’m not comfortable with giving them everything a decent hacker needs to cause untold problems for me so I’ve pretty much called time on them -

I replied saying that I was not comfortable sharing that information and that all they needed to know about my business can be found on companies house and facebook(!)
I’ve heard nothing since.

I said more or less the same & was told if I don’t give the information required, the account will be put on hold & payments won’t be made until they have what they require. I was then told that I need to contact my terminal provider to cancel the service. I’m guessing that means that we do as we’re told or lose the facility

Plenty of other options these days, such as izettle etc. yes you pay a little more but I see no reason why anyone needs all that information, I didn’t need to give that much info to open my business account, apply for leasing credit, etc.

I’ve got a sum up. Never had a problem since day one [emoji106]

Yea we use stripe. Did the maths at Christmas and still cheaper than a terminal for us. Be only around 3k a month through on card. Most of our payments are BACS and we push for that
-
I prefer not to take large payments on the card machine & push for bacs. We also use stripe with our invoicing app but were lead to believe that the app isn’t going to be compliant with the new digital tax system & we’re advised to go with sage or quick books. Haven’t really had much time to look into it & my accountant & book keeper have both sat firmly on the fence. This side of the business really isn’t my bag
-
typically we try and push for bacs, but what do you do with those Joe Bloggs customers you don’t know from Adam, I’d sooner take card than let them wander off into the sunset on the promise of bacs,
I’m not loving our pricing on the cards to be fair, but maybe 1/2 of our payments come through that way.
-
We signed up for an account with Square.
If we were to get rid of our terminal, we’d save a small, but noticeable sum each month. It’s OK for payments over the phone, and we can send links that enables them to pay by card online rather than ring up.
I’m not convinced about customers being comfortable using their card reader connected to the phone… plus the Chip & Pin is quicker, more convenient, but we pay for that.
What really get’s my goat is when they pay with a ‘commercial visa’ or ‘commercial mastercard’, as the rates are sky high

Using QuickBooks, links in with stripe well enough and all seems ok.
My point with stripe was if I was suddenly doing 6k a month or maybe even 10k a month in card I would look at a terminal as there fee per transaction would possibly work out more.
In terms of customer concerns we have had it for 2 years now and I just spin computer round and say “we use stripe, just like PayPal, just allows us to take card payments” and I’ve not had anyone refuse or look concerned.
Most of it is small transactions as well, garment prints, posters.. joe bloggers really.

I’ve just looked up the new rates we’re being offered to renew… I was never made aware that commercial or business cards were so high.. I’m shocked, 4% is a big chunk on a £1k job!

Yes, and some of those cars don’t say it’s a commercial card, it just looks like a Visa card. Not sure if you can negotiate a better rate on those?

They’ve come back to me with the 3.6%’s coming down to 2.9%’, makes you wonder how far down they could come!

I took a card payment that required me to call to authorise the payment.
"Have you got the card number?"
Yep it’s on the receipt"Have you got the security code?"
Erm no, I’ve keyed it directly in, when they gave their details over the phone.
"Oh without that, we cant authorise it"
So you’re saying I should write down the details, not key it directly into the machine, which would a PCIDSS issue, just in case I need to call for a manual authorisation?
"Yes that’s fine so long as you destroy them"
They make it up as they go along. Didn’t have any issues with a bank transfer.
