  • Car windscreen sunstrips, advice needed please?

Posted by David Keeble on August 1, 2004 at 7:41 pm

Someone has asked me for a sunstrip for their mini and Citreon car.
Has the strip to be curved?
If so how much of the curve would be a happy medium, as cars are different shapes and widths?
Is there a demonstration to view?

I will not be fitting the sunstrip, they will fit themselves.
I will cut there logo or text into the sunstrip or supply sperate as an overlay, once the strip is fitted.

I’ve been chatting to another UKSB member on the phone about this, just about to start selling them in my shop.

Basically, I think you can get away with a 100mm x 1200mm strip of vinyl with the text cut separately and overlaid onto the vinyl strip. I may be wrong, interested to know if there is another way, but that’s the way I was going to do it 😀

    Cheers, Dewi

Do you think I should have the text (if layed over) on a curve like a smiley face 🙂

I’m gonna give it a go.

    thank you!

I did one yesterday, the guy wanted it 140mm deep, so I just cut a strip that depth, layed it on the window overlapping the rubber seals and trimmed in, layed his logo on top and he was well happy.

I had to do one for a photo shoot on an old ford Capri
So the sunstrip had to be the old type.
You know: The one with ‘Kevin’ and ‘Angie’ complete with furry dice?

Thought it would be a doddle but it took me a little while because of trying to get it to conform to the curve.

As I remember the trick is not to trim what might appear to be excessive surplus before fitting. Keep the full width. Apply and then trim the excess off from the top.

I know a lot of people strip for the Sun but I haven’t seen a sun strip

    John

There is no need to curve the text Syd, it’ll follow the contours of the windscreen anyway I should imagine.

Mini graphic wise, I have a brilliant one, but it’s at the shop. I can send it in the morning though.

    Cheers, Dewi

    we sell sun stripes too.

usually, just give the customer a length of vinyl and then the text or graphic.

no need to arch/curve anything as the windscreen does it for you, as mentioned, if fitting start at the centre and work outwards.

this might not need saying, but, it fits on the outside.

I think the law says you can have a stripe 6 inches deep.

what price are you thinking of knocking these out at?

I have actually seen these in the local car acc shop, about the same size.
Bill Dewison mentioned, Screenprinted selling for £12.
but with only a few designs/colours.

I cannot seem to get more than £18 for them.

    I don’t do them anymore!
I got fed up with the boy racers telling me what price I should be charging them!

They wanted them cut & fitted for £15. yeh right!

nope rather do something else, and I did enjoy doing them.

I was going to wack a £15 price tag on them, as I’m already selling a lot of car and bike graphics, so it would be an additional purchase in the vast majority of cases. I tend to get the number plate, the car graphic and hopefully, there’ll be a sun strip on top now 😀 For some reason, the boy racers like me, maybe I should start changing my aftershave 😮

    Cheers, Bill Dewison

I haven’t done any sunstrips for ages. I usually tell them that we no longer do these but offer to sell them a strip of vinyl to fit themselves if they want. This usually gets rid of the b*gg*rs and allows me to go back to listening to radio 2 without interference from the cursed constant "boom Boom" blasting out of the customers Peugeot 206 complete with customised 2000 watt RMS stereo

we do the sun strips, and as far as we have been told by plod the sunstrips are not to be touched by the wipers, work that one out, so if the boy racer in his Saxo wants a deeper strip, we send him to Halfords to get smaller wipers job done, and still have his money for the sunstrip

I do a lot of these things.
If it is just graphics, I do make them have a slight curve like a smile.
If they want a banner (as we call them)
I make a rectangle bigger than the window itself but only curve the bottom.
Then I let the kids install & cut the top themselves…
gives ’em something to do on a Friday night rather than drag-racing at traffic lights.
I know an installed banner with graphics goes for well over $100 here.
I sell 2 graphics in a stacked strip (uninstalled) for $25.
That way if one is screwed up, they have a replacement.
This is for boy-racers only. If a Yuppie soccer mom came in I’d charge her $50.
I don’t mind doing them, as the kids never squabble about prices with me
and they always pay cash. Of course, they all want all-caps Old English!
I think that here, a graphic can be no deeper in the middle than 4".
Some cops will pull the kids over and make them scrape off their stickers!
    Love…Jill
