  • Car Window Tint Laws?

Posted by Joseph Helm on July 20, 2009 at 3:59 pm

    Hi Everyone!

We’ve been asked a few times now about tinting car windows.

I’ve read a bunch of websites, but they all seem to tell different stories.

Does anyone here know the real UK Laws on car tinting?
(or point me to a good web page)

I don’t want to take orders, until I know the law.

    Thanks

    Joseph

    straight from the gov.

    http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosacorp/reposit … 202008.pdf

Pre April ’85 – must allow 70% L.T on windscreen & glass forward of ‘B’ pillar

Post Aptil ’85 – must allow 75% on windscreen, 70% on glass forward of ‘B’ pillar

Rear passenger & back windows – unlimited tint.

Bearing in mind most modern cars came with all of the glass pre-tinted to around 15 to 20% (80% L.T.) – there is virtually no room to add extra tint legally to any window you are legally obliged to be looking through.

I just had my 2 front side windows tinted this past Saturday. I know I’m here in the US but I was talking to the installer, he said that since the car manufactures are using tinted glass his business has dropped off by 50%.

He also said that he has started doing homes and offices.
