CAR REG PLATES – SUPPLIER OF EQUIP?
Posted by The Disc Doctor on 11 November 2005 at 22:54Hi All,
Have an idea on using car registration plates to make signs. The usual no parking etc, and a little Company logo or colour graphic. ( photo quality )
The problem I’m having is what machine, and were to buy one from.
Sure theres someone out there with the info.
Thanks for your time.

I`ve got the oki, and have to say, its sold with alittle over hipe, to say the least.
it can not print white so any image transfered to the rear plate will almost certainly change colour.
i`ve also seen plates that have faded badly.
i`ve not tried to use it on other than the numberplate substrates, so can`t comment on white vinyl products.
we use it for ghosting and nothing else.
if buying, i would ask the question regarding the software, as some folk might be charged and anually fee for using it, if you don`t buy a certain amount of substrates off the supplier.
-
Interesting.
Static and T’shirts.
Is it an expensive system? -
Thanks Robert.
Talked to Paul at uknumberplates.com ( really helpful bloke. )
Hopefully have my order delivered for Wednesday.
The OKI colour laser systems are £380+vat at okidirect.co.uk, and there’s a £80 cash back until end of December. Looking at the promotional stuff at Tennnats uk Ltd, looks like a lot of opportunities with this cheap little set up.
Oh well back to looking through uksignboards.
-
The Oki system at £380.00 will not print number plates or on vinyls.
Tennants sell the printers tweeked to print on heat resistant vinyl and
also supply printers with the software for number plates etc.Price for full system inc software and set up is about £995.00 exc
still get the £80.00 cash back I believe. -
i was offered the oki with or without the software.
i have heard that 1 supplier has dropped/is dropping the oki because of the lack of support from tennents and oki.
if its just numberplates you are looking to supply, I believe the thermal printing system if far better.
-
Martin you are 100% correct, I have an Oki laser printer and when I found out what was available from tennents thought I would be able to put it to good use and supply a lot of new products myself. Unfortunatly as you say because the Oki printers they supply are modified I couldn’t use mine for very much at all, they change the height that it prints at as well as tweeking it.
-
I had a demo on the oki system from tennants yesterday seems like a good piece of kit, but i didnt know about not being able to print white.. what are the ways around this?
thanks
-
could any one give me info on the cost of a thermal printer for plates and is the media used different from laser graphic system,i will be using a different alphabet in other words no a,b or c,s so it must connect to a computer, Tom

Hi carla,
welcome to the boards, but before you just go bouncing around the "number plate" posts, please look at the dates they were posted, some are very old and things do change, over time.We have some off the most experienced people in the business on the boards,
Number plates have been discussed inside out over the last few years, It may be advantageous if you start a new topic on what you want to know or pass on to others. that way you will get a coherant thread.Once again welcome, I’m sure you will find this place very educational, to say the least.

I have been offered 1500 sets of number plates a year. I have a solvent printer, lmainater router.
What is the legislation on producing number plates?
What is the process/materials used as a standard?
Cheers,
Rich
-
what bit of the plate do you want to do?
just asking cause i used to screenprint 800 no. plates a day, the coloured line that runs around the inside of the plate 😀nik
-
i want to be able to create the whole thing:
Route the acrylic
Print the background + variable data
mount the image to the reverse of the acrylic. What sort of vinyl is used and how is it mounted?

To make number plates you need to be dvla registered (if you make or supply them to the english market) When you say offered, is that with the proviso that you can supply cheaper than the existing supplier?
I only ask because the maths need to be looked at closely, its only about 11 sets a day(averaged out) and considering the 2 new car reg dates when the demand will be much higher, So although you already have the kit You need to calculate if it is going to give you the commercial edge by producing the acrylic etc yourself, they are already available ready made, and given the quantity, may cheaper to buy in?
(The acrylic and material, not the finished product)

I must admit to being hugely disappointed by the Oki. It is excellent for showplates and white Reg plates but it is such an inconvenience trying to create a rear plate to match a front and in fact, it severely restricts the designs you can offer.
The window stickers are quite poor too as the ink is too transparent to stand out against glass.
Is there a colour thermal system for producing plates?
Kenny 😀
-
i must admit i just had a customer in today who wasnt to happy with the blue on rear plate but well
any way if theres a cheapish thermal jobby i would be interested too
-
Does that "um" mean we’re missing sonething obvious 😕 :lol1:
-
give the pc60 a go its good for spot colours but the ribbons are expensive

-
I use the Samsung Carla but it comes with a very good in feed try, adjustable for all sizes of plates. Quite a good piece of kit. Prints straight onto reflective of a certain type.
-
and is it the ml model affore mentioned or a diferent 1 if u dont mind me asking also if different model does it do colour or just black
and does any 1 no if there is a special ink for screen p0rinting the borders and badges rather than laser printing them and thermal. -
Mines the Nota branded one and only prints black. Very good for ghosting onto reflective
