cant seem to apply vinyl dry, why is this?
Posted by brisca943 on 6 January 2008 at 22:55Can anybody help? create my own numbers and signwriting for my race and rally cars. finding it 10 times easier to apply oracal 651 when wet, but find that it does not stick quite as well as when doing it dry. am using water with a tiny drop of washing up liquid. are there any other down side to applying wet? and what are the pro and cons of both methods. Thanks in anticipation of your help.

If your finding it 10 times easier wet stick to that way. The only downside of a wet application is if your doing it in layers, it will take a little longer waiting for the drying and peeling of the application tape.
Most people on this site recommend "Rapid Tac" but i can’t comment on it, never used it. Use it rather than your water mixture, quicker drying and better stick? i think. 😀Hope this helps.

Just my opinion of course… but.
the only thing wet application helps with is getting the vinyl into position, everything from then on is downhill.
applying dry is harder, granted, but its just down to technique and experience. Practice makes perfect, as the saying goes…my advice would be to use rapid tac 2 if you have to use the wet app method. rapid-tac will help stimulate the adhesive to bite. where as soapy bubbles is simply a waiting on it drying out process.
Note, never ever apply vinyls of recessed areas of a vehicle using any wet application method.

Thanks for your help. Will try out the tack spray and see how i get on. The only reason I have been doing it wet as I seem to get some small bubbles when dry , But I suppose as you say it is just down to practice. Thanks again.
Has anybody got any experience of applying Carbon Fibre effect vinyl to large areas? ( By large I mean about 600 by 600 mm) and what is the best type to use.

i have never used carbon vinyl but i am pretty sure grafityp sell it.
see advert on homepage, left hand side for contact info. -
There’s nothing wrong with applying vinyl wet. For many it makes the job much easier – but dry is quicker – that’s the only difference IMO.

Thanks for that I will contact them and see if I can get a small sample.

Towards the end of last year i covered the inside of about 200 windows at a nightclub near me with carbon effect vinyl.
absolute nightmare.Each window was 535mm x 585mm, each window sat in a 75mm recess.
we stuck them dry but it was a nightmare, the problem for us was dust. the building work hadn’t been completed and we had plasterers working not far from us.
This material shows up everything, Also once stuck it can’t be lifted if you need to remove a particle of dirt. The two layers which make up the carbon effect separate.
We used material supplied by Hexis. We paid a lot less than £8.00 per meter. A 50m roll was around £300 +vat
