Canon 8400 pigment confusion…..
Hi all
I’m a bit new to this – well actually very new, I have printed onto Canon outdoor polypro banner media, does this need to be laminated to be made waterproof, if so could anyone recommend a good product and supplier in the UK.
I thought as the media stated it was waterproof for exterior use it wouldnt need laminating, any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to deliver the banners on Friday and dont want to mess up on the order.Many Many Thanks in advance

I don’t have your printer but the general consensus is that pigmented aqueous printers will need to have their output laminated if you expect any type of outdoor life span. The pigments themselves are carried with water. The banner media itself may be water resist but unless it has magical properties it can’t be expected to really water fast.
Laminating banners is never a perfect idea (IMHO) but I suppose you could contact a suppler about a pressure sensitive material. In my neck of the woods there’s a product called Bulldog which is a spray product designed for situations like yours.

I’ve got a HP3000 on pigment inks and I’ve done all sorts of prints for indoors and outdoors.
The print will be ok for a few days if the inks are pigment and the media is water resistant, after that wear and tear comes in, the coating starts to come away and the print slowly fades because it’s being worn off not because the inks are fading.
I did a test with a picture, I laminated only half of it and after about 2 – 3 months you could really see the difference, it still lasted for nearly a year though but by then you could barely see the print on the unlaminated side the laminated side was just the same as the day I printed it.
