  • Can you wrap all the panels on a smart roadster?

Posted by Warren Beard on 7 March 2009 at 11:20

    Hi All

I will be doing a solid colour wrap on one of these and as you know they have 3 different coloured panels, can all of these be wrapped? I don’t see a problem but is there something I might not know as a lot of the time these are left unwrapped but I think it’s more down to design/looks than the fact it can’t be wrapped.

Also does any body know of any difficult areas to wrap besides the headlights 😕

    cheers

    Warren

2 out of three Dave, but if 0-60 in 11.7 secs and a top of only 109mph is considered very fast then I can only assume you’re comparing it with a Rickshaw sir…… :lol1:

Never wrapped one but the different coloured panels are different materials,on your pic,the silver bit is the metal safety cell the green bit is the removable body panels and the dark bit around the lights is textured.

Hope this was a bit more constructive than the badly modified "tarts handbag" posted. 😀

not really as it still doesn’t tell me if they can be wrapped without problem 🙄

but thanks for the constructive effort 😉

Jasons posts is still the most helpful and shortest :lol1:

the one I seen was all plastic but all the same plsatic. No high energy plastic you see on side mouldings etc. If yours has high energy plastic anywhere the vinyl will not adhere long to it.

how would I know if it’s high energy plastic or not 😕

The car is far away so can’t be seen or tested until he brings it down to me, the job going ahead may depend on whether or not it can be a full wrap.

on the picture it’s the dark green/grey panel on the front around the headlights, there is also some at the back apparently. not sure what it is or how it feels so have asked customer.

    thanks for your help.

    cheers

Warren, I’d have to agree with Jason. The plastic area are not smooth and you may find that it seems to stick but after a little expansion and contraction with temp change you may be in trouble. Even if your customer was happy to try after you explain all this it’s your rep on the line. A difficult decision, personally I’d love to be the one to get a total wrap that lasts on these panels but at what cost. Different materials for different panels may be a solution but again at what cost? colors would never match either.
I’m sure this isn’t the easy answer you were looking for but no halford reject mods off google images from me! 😉
Keep us posted as to what you decide and how it goes if you do it!

    Hi Guys

Customer is now thinking about it as he wanted it completely wrapped, I told him it can’t be done.

If he decides to go ahead it will be a part wrap but will update the thread accordingly.

    cheers

You might have more trouble than you think around the headlights as I am quite certain that is a matte finished plastic (dark green areas) and therefore it will need to be glossed prior to application and then you’d be better off spraying these areas, No? I’ll continue to observe this forum with interest. The very best of luck with it!
