can wrapping vinyl be re-heated and stuck back down again?
Posted by Marc F on 26 February 2007 at 10:54We’ve done a vehicle wrap on a transit van and we used cast vinyl and cast laminate – it has been 3 weeks since we done this and around all the panel mouldings it has popped out and we’ve no idea what has happened.
At this point we’re ready to re-do the whole van but we were just wondering if it could be re-heated and stuck.
Does anyone know what could have happened and a way to prevent this in the future.
All help will be greatly appreciated.

Your probably wasting your time trying to reheat it and get it to stay in place. The problem is either down to the van not being cleaned and dried properly or not enough heat being applied after the vinyl had been applied or a combination of the two. Read through some of the posts on wrapping. Were the two materials used from the same supplier as the vinyl and laminate should really be matched to ensure they both have the same characteristics. What temperature did you heat the vinyl to after it was applied as this is where a decent temp sensor comes in to its own.

i agree with martin, heating it down again wont help matters much, as the forming of the vinyl has to be done under the first application, to get it into shape, i had the same prob with a vw transporter, as the swages are quite deep, so i bought a laser temp sensor, and havent looked back!!!
was the van done under cover? as ambient temps can make life hard or easy.
which vinyl did you use aswell?
i tend to use a specilist cleaner for the panel work, as i reckon it is one of the most important parts of wrapping, dont want to sound like im preaching, but just want to make sure you guys dont fall down the same pitfalls i did!!

Cleanliness may be the problem, but I’d almost guarantee you’ve not heated it for long enough, and its not got hot enough.
Don’t worry, we’ve all experienced it in the early days of wrapping, and some of us still get caught out trying to rush the job.
Hope that helps

Okay, well after some inquiries we have found out that people ‘lance’ (cut) the panel recesses in order to stop these blow outs from happening.
Does this method seem correct or is there a way to actually apply the vinyl keeping it totally smooth and without a line along it.
Cheers,

Well it is not incorrect to cut the panel recesses out but neither is it correct !!!
Sorry thats just how it is. I personally would never cut the recesses out because I think it spoils the graphic when you have a big white rectangular shape right through it and if the right materials are used and the vinyl is applied properly then you won’t have it blowing out or whatever the technical term is.i guess it comes down to what you and the customer feel would be best but I would never tell a customer that the recesses have to be cut out because it is simply not true.
Some people do it but I would think it is done because the customer wants a cheaper job and the process is explained to them before the job is done.

I wouldn’t cut the graphic either, same reasons as Martin really.
Its not something that you can’t get around, as long as the preparation is correct, and you are using the correct material for the job.
Just my 2c’s
