  • can someone tell me what is melting the vinyl?

    Hi all,

A customer of mine is having a few problems with vandals who keep throwing some liquid onto his sign. Whatever it is, it melts the vinyl almost as if it is acid, although the perspex underneath is not damaged. He wants me to put up a new sign, but I want to know what the liquid may be. Any ideas?? And before anyone suggests it, it is not one of my customer retention plots!!! Like the glazier who employs kids to break windows!!

    Brake fluid?
I’ve heard that it can ruin both vinyl and paint.

Graham, don’t really know what the chemical they are throwing is, maybe some sort of paint stripper like nitromorse or maybe even some sort of thinners. You say his sign has a perspex substrate so you could try using a clear acrylic panel with the graphics on the reverse or covering the front with a clear polycarb sheet to prevent this happening again.

Phone the local colleges and contact the chemistry professors. Pose your question to them. I wouldn’t be surprised by there having been a class demonstration of how readily plastics and vinyls can be melted, and now some students have been demonstrating their cleverness.

In the meantime, is there an alternative non-vinyl solution that will discourage the vandalism? Or perhaps a deal needs to be made, such that you’re only mounting a cheap short-term vinyl, with expectation that it will be frequently replaced (until the vandals get bored).

    Cheers,

    Rod

If it’s not melting the perspex underneath – then why not try a clear acrylic panel, lettered on the back, backed off with a white vinyl overlay so that the sign is read through the clear acrylic.

(Sorry – just realised that Martin has already suggested this)

I would guess the same as Jill says – i.e Brake fluid is what has been used

Or maybe it was a lazer beam from the eye of a cyborg student created by the robotics class!

Mind you, I’ve never tried the brake fluid on a sign…but I’ve been tempted!
I always wanted to dump it on a no-pay client from years back.
That or a well-aimed shot from a paintball gun.

Naw. More than likely, it’s a group of student telepaths. All they’ve done is create the illusion that the sign has melting ala Salvadore Dali, and poor Graham keeps getting suckered into replacing his own perfectly good application. All Graham need do is search the garbage bin to locate the discarded sign material, and he will realize that the sign is perfectly fine! Just sit for a while and meditate, and the illusion should gradually dissipate.

    Cheers,

    Rod
