Can somebody please help with our Novajet 750
Posted by shadieb on 13 February 2011 at 16:01Hi, I use the Novajet mainly for canvas and poster prints. I was doing a few jobs when I got the dreaded carriage axis failure, but this time it was really making a grating noise and dragging badly. I figured the best thing to do was to pop the bushings out give them a clean/grease. I have done this a few times without problem in the past. Unfortunately this time one of the bushings broke in half. I have managed to source some on Ebay from a Chinese seller for a couple of quid each, but they are listed as 14 – 25 days for delivery.
Does anybody have a spare pair I could buy, just to keep us going while the new ones arrive. Many thanks for any help offered.

hello who ever you are.
will the bush not stay in place even in 2 halves.
if you keep the bar clean and very lightly oiled you wont have to do this.
are the felt end bits lightly oiled and in good nick as these clean the bar as it works. and protects the bushes from grit getting in to bushes.
mine is about 14 years old and never had to remove them -
Hi, many thanks for your help. I reckon the bush will go back in temporarily but I was worried about it being in 2 halfs and the risk of it scratching the bar.
I can’t remember seeing any felt ends when I removed them? Where would I find these? The thing is, it was working great then just started to judder and jam, almost like something was broken and locking the carriage up. I have just read that there may be 2 inner bushes that I might need to check?
I am not back at the unit until tomorrow so won’t be able to check until then.Thank you again for your help.

From memory, it is only the Encad 850 or 880 that has inner bushes.
In my experience, oiling the bar only attracts dust and dirt and therefore causes the carriage to judder and give you carriage axis errors. The other thing to look at is the belt and the idler wheel, they could be causing your problems.
If you are looking for spares, try contacting Applied Image Technology, they may be able to help. -
You have probably caused the problems yourself to be honest. Encad bushes are phosphor bronze which is self lubricating so you shouldn’t be putting any kind of grease anywhere near them, grease just collects dirt and dust which then cause problems. Chris said light oil and I am guessing he is talking about something like sewing machine oil but personally I wouldn’t even use that as there is no need. Just a wipe over the rail with somethink like a lint free cloth will do just to remove any dust that may have settled while not in use.
Oh and if you take the time to introduce yourself in the say hello forum you will find you will get a lot more help generally.

Managed to trace the fault to the motor powering the belt and carriage. Took it apart, tested motor and all seemed okay, so put it back together and working fine now. Must have been a static build up or something. Still only got half a bushing in one side but it doesn’t seem to be causing any problems.
Thanks for the help guys.

As said before, these printers really do not like to be oiled. They are indeed self lubricating bushes and should not be oiled. I do have loads of old broken Encads if you need me to check anything or if you need to borrow a part to diagnose a fault.
Let me know if you get stuck

Thankyou Stafford,
I really appreciate the offer and the advise on not lubricating the carriage. I have cleaned the bar down and totally degreased it now.
I have noticed it starting to judder again a bit more than normal which I am pretty sure is the broken bushing causing the problem, it looks a little out of shape. If you had a couple of spares ones I could purchase or borrow it would be really helpful. I only really need one, but would prefer to change them both if possible just to eliminate them from any further issues.
Best regards Paul.

No probs. I would say that it would be worth replacing both sides now any way as the bushes may have been contaminated by the oiled bar. Just remind me, the 750 has 4 printheads, yes? It’s not like the 850/880 where is has 2 x 4 heads? I’ll have a rummage and see if we’ve got any kicking around and let you know.

Yo are quite correct Stafford the 750 just has the one bank of 4 heads unlike the 850 which has two
Your new ones should be here soon now so might be worth waiting till they arrive and make sure before you fit them you remove any traces of oil or grease otherwise you will just muck up the new bushes.

Thanks Martin.
Paul, I don’t have any new bushes, only some scabby looking ones on a couple of old carriage assemblies.
Good luck when your new ones arrive, keep the post updated with how you get on.

No problem Stafford, really appreciate you checking for me.
Thank you again and to everyone else who helped, it is greatly appreciated.I will also make sure to avoid any oil or grease going near the carriage rail ever again.
Best regards Paul.
