Hi there could anyone tell me if its possible to get a decent result by having lettering cut on a plotter out of some sort of masking film, applying it to the vehicle & painting in the letters with One-Shot, sort of like stencilling…. im sorry if this doesnt quite make sense but be gentle as i am a novice… thanks

I have done this, as have many others.
It’s not a bad job if you get the right mask.
Now what that might be, I can’t say.
I have had poor results with Cal-Mask by Arlon as well as mac mask by Mac-Tac.
Good thing I’m pretty fair at hand-painting.

I used a vinyl mask for a gold leaf job. The mask was Oracal Oramask, you can buy this from Europoint. Great stuff.

I mean that the mask was horrible to weed & cut…stuck up under my fingernails etc.
    Took hours.
Then I stuck it on and rolled it
    (this was a 4’x6′ job site sign with 1" Hellvetica contractor’s names…ugh)
Tried to pull it up fast, it made a terrible mess.
Let it dry & it was even worse, peeled off the fricking 1-Shot.
Ended up re-painting the whole mess by hand.
(I should have just made a pounce pattern and gone from there)
That’s what I meant by bad results.
Supposedly Gerber makes a good mask.
I have had better luck using calandered vinyl.
And even better results by just painting the traditional way. 😉

Most makers of Vinyl do a paint mask, I have used it on glass and panels without a problem, just let the paint dry fully, before lifting the mask. (Cant vouch for one shot though, as I have never used it) I will be off to the trossachs next month to see how the real pro’s do it!

i tend to lift the mask after about ten mins of painting…if i let it dry i get a ridge of paint round the lettering, which is unsightly especially if the lettering is fairly small, but then again i only use solvent inks to paint with 😀
