  • can i use illustrator to cut from photoshop?

Posted by Terry Cheney on January 23, 2005 at 3:45 pm

Not being a Corel fan, I have found their grip on this industry frustrating.
Can anyone offer any advice on getting Roland plotter/cutters to accept cutting plans from Illustrator – more to the point, is there a way of using illustrator to plot a cut pattern around photoshop designs with intricate acid/burned or bevelled edges?
Thanks in anticipation of a reply

I know from the PC600 (using colour choice) there is a file you can import to Illustrator that gives you a contour cut line in the swatch that it adds to your palettes. but I’m sure you can do it without this all to do with line type size and colour.
I’ll have a hunt around an see if I can find anything.

Apparently it works if you turn off all the printing (to do with the pc600) and you can use it to cut. Gimme a buzz if you need help or if no one else helps.

Many thanks for your reply, Gordon.
I am now awaiting a reply from both Roland and Adobe, but would like to take you up on your offer if I’m still puzzled.
I will post any info I receive on this list, in case there is someone else out there interested.

Graphtec do a program that plugs in to Illustrator and lets you cut, I haven’t used it, but I think Pete (Magpie) uses it. Not sure whether it would work with a Roland plotter though 😕 Is there not a plug in similar to Co-Cut you could use? (Bit of a daft question really as if there were, you probably wouldn’t be asking for help in here 😳 )

If I come across anything, I’ll let you know as well 😀

    Cheers, Dewi

    hi

the roland windows cutter driver works the same in ilistrator as corel.
i find i can create a cut path by turning the image as black as pos by levels curves and gamma then import in to corel & Trace it – that will give a vector cut line as long as you size bit map and vector together will size spot on

Thanks Chris, but my aim is to do without Corel altogether…..is this possible. I can get an accurate outline of my bitmap designs, but do not understand how to set up Illustrator to communicate with the Roland Camm1. In fact, I am still awaiting feedback from both Adobe and Roland on this very point. This is sooooo frustrating, but thanks to all for your imput – please keep ’em coming
