  • can i use cheap household insulation instead of hdu?

    Hi all,
A while back there was a discussion on HDU were somebody suggested using household insulation (the foil covered stuff) as a cheap altenative. Is this the case and has anybody used it ‘outdoors’ and if so, what way was it painted?
    Any tips welcome
    TIA

    OK Harry, here goes………

This is the info I have…….It’s not wood so I don’t use it but others have and it works just fine.

First, use the pink or blue insulation foam……not the stuff with the foil on it. Using acrylic house paints works fine (2 primer/2 top coats). The down side is they are soft and if birds land on them their claws can take out some of the foam (of course I assume you are making dimensional raised letters?) If you want a hard coat, this is the stuff to use http://www.industrialpolymers.com/styrospray.html
If you have any questions I’m pretty sure I can get you the info you need.

I used the stuff with foil on once, to make 2 fake brick walls. Tried to remove the foil, what a pig!
Once (most of) the foil was off, I routed it to create the brick shapes, (wear a mask & goggles, the dust is foul) then roller-painted it with normal emulsion.

Ended up looking very good, but as Joe said, any knocks etc will damage it.

    Thanks Joe and Lorraine,
    Two questions,
I don’t know or have never seen the pink and blue stuff, why is the foil stuff different?

Anybody know who supplies the styrospray or equivalent over here?
    Thanks again

    Harry
try Made In Hollwood in Dundalk,
they use polystyrene a lot and probably coat it with something like that. Your probably not going to be doing their type of work from it so they may let you know were to get it, There’s an article on the boards about them,

    Regards Ian

P.S. what about the Mark II,

Thanks Ian, never thought of Fran in Made in Hollywood
The Mark 11 is done, very basic job, but client loved it. So everyone is happy. Meant to get a pic of it, but it’s coming back in for a few sponsor changes, so I will get one then.
    Cheers, you keeping busy?
