Can i run a troughlight from solar power?
Posted by Martin Manley on 4 October 2011 at 08:52I’ve just moved premises and have a sign about 100 metres from my workshop with no power supply anywhere near. Is it possible to rig up an LED or fluorescent trough light using a solar panel like the ones you see at country bus stops?

I used insight sign systems based in glasgow and use their "super bright" LED trough lights. however, i am unsure if they offer a solor panel powered option.
http://www.insightsignsystems.com/you may want to speak to signscape who DO offer solar panel sign lighting solutions, but im not sure if a trough light is one of them.
http://www.sign-making-supplies.co.uk/i would suggest looking on the UKSB Sign Toolbar also as there are alternative suppliers on there.

Problem is – at night time when you want to switch the light on there is no sunlight to power the solar panel 😕

Solar panel > Charges 12 V battery ( Google 12V solar battery Charger) > timer > Lights on / Off on a 12V ( not 24 as most Trough lights are) LED light.
Simples 😀

Sounds good Ian but the whole solar power thing (special LEDs, chargers, solar kit) all works out really expensive – anyone got any other ideas for lighting this thing? Battery powered lights for instance?

How big is your sign ? I Have a solar LED light unit that uses 5 LEDs but it is fairly small 180mm length – quite bright thou with dawn to dusk sensor around £20

Sign is 915mm wide by 1800mm. if I had a troughlight that washed down even half of it I’d be happy. If i could get one for £20 quid I’d be even happier!!!Please post details of your light….
