can i put vinyl onto fresh cellulose paint?
HI all,
got a quick job to do, basically a body shop repair, they’ve just painted the side i need to repair with a water based paint (i assume like the old cellulose as opposed to the now defunked 2pack), i mentioned on the quote that they need to wait 7 days for the paint to outgas, but will do it sooner if the accept responsibility for it bubbling up or something silly,it’s only 651 oracle, am i right in saying 7 days? they obviously want it out the workshop asap.

As long as they sign a waiver.
I am always leery no matter the paint of applying vinyl to it before two weeks.
I also only use 751 or 851 on vehicles, but the thicker 651 may hide any bubbles which might occur due to outgassing.
I would also worry down the road when the vinyl is removed, that the paint will come up also.
But again, a waiver will CYA.

Hugh, you say they have repaired it with a water based paint.
Are you sure?
I think you might mean cellulose which takes longer to out gas than 2 pack as it is air drying where 2 pack is chemical drying.
7 days would be a minimum for me and do get that waiver as Gill suggests. -

the guy said it’s a water based paint on the phone just now. 2 pack is now illegal so not used any more. will tell him it’s a week + waiver.

If its been in the oven, whick is normal. then it should be ok I do bodyshop repairs on a regular basis and never had a bubble problem. even when applying the vinyl next day

yes peter that was my opinion until i got bit 2 years ago from a top body shop.
any less than 5 days its now there problem.

All but the smallest body shops now paint using water based colour this is air dried in the oven with air circulation and is not baked, this is then clear coated with 2k lacquer which is baked. When the vehicle comes out the oven and has had time to cool the vehicle can go into service. Due to this process there is very little out gassing and after a day I would have no problems fitting the vinyls.
