  • Can I open a PSD file in winpcsign?

Posted by Chris Whitehead on 4 April 2006 at 00:32

I appear only to have the basic version of WINPCSign. So I dont have tje auto-vectorise features.

I have been sent a small design in a PSD (Photoshop file), and I am trying to get this into a vectorised format so I can re-import it into WINPCSIGN.

So far I have tried everything, incluing shofting the file into Illustrator CS, and then exporting in every option.

WinPCSign is seeing the files, but when doing a vector conversion, its only showing a black rectangle.

Now this is the strange bit as I got an artwork CD off ebay, and the EPS/AI files on there work a treat and once the elements have been imported, it opens these fine.

Can anyone shed any light on where I am going wrong.

    Software wise, I have:

    Photoshop 7
    Illustrator CS
    WinPC Sign – basic

Is there something else I can do it in? or am I missing something really simple?

    Many thanks in advance..

A .psd file will be raster based. There are a few ways to make it vector, none are as easy as just opening it in another program unfortunately. There are ways to select certain layers and make them vector paths that can be imported into Ilustrator. Sometimes, if the design is simple enough you are better off just opening it up in Illustrator and tracing it. It all comes down to what way works best for you.

Hi marek, so if I flatten it all to one layer? Is there a way to create the vector paths?

Or would it be easier doing it layer at a time and positioning it withing WinPCSign?

If this is such a complex opertaion outside of WinPCSign, how come its so easy to vectorise them in the pro version! (?)

Sorry for the "newbie" questions.. Im just eager to learn 😀

Does Adobe Illustrator CS not have the ‘Live Trace’ feature ?

I’m using CS 2 and it has a half decent raster to vector tool (object – Live Trace – Make and Expand).

You could also use Adobe Streamline which is another Raster – Vector application (you have to tweak the settings to get it right though).

    Regards

    Dave.

Ahh It doesnt appear to have the live trace feature..

Looks like I need to upgrade sooner than I think.. :lol1:

Never heard of Streamline before, i’ll go and do some investigations. 😎

Hi i have used Winpcsign before when you are exporting the graphic from Adobe it needs to be set to Illustrator version 3 or it will just show and outline rectangle
