  • can anyone tell me why summa has tracking problems?

I have a summasign D600 dragknife cutter which is nearly ten years old.

In recent months it’s tracking ability has deteriorated rather rapidly. We used to be able to cut up to 5-10 metres of vinyl without any problems – but recently we have found the tracking drifts out in as little as a metre of vinyl – so much so that the vinyl often runs off the rollers messing up the entire section being cut.

I’ve put the gradual deterioration down to "wear and tear". Is it time to scrap the machine and buy a new one – or does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be wrong.

phill, this happened to an old roland i had. so it maybe something similar.
one of the things that flaws tracking is the little rubber wheels being worn away to one side, or just worn i guess…
we replaced our wheels and it appeared to sorted the problem… then a month or so later, we had what you are getting now.
not sure about your summa, but in the old roland. you have a grit bar that the pinches clamp onto for tracking. well in the roland the grit bar roller was in two sections. (it looked like one bar, but was in two but hidden under the casing) anyway… because we had really been putting it thru its paces the last month… the bar began to form some play/movement & increased in a matter of days to the point we were pulling out hair out.

personally, ide give ken a buzz and ask him what he thinks mate. kens now officialy the uksg’s tech man for cutters and printers in north england and scotland. (this will be announced properly soon with full details)

Thanks Rob – Ken did a brilliant job in setting up our colorcamm after a new head was replaced. I did wonder about giving him a call about this. I will do now though 😀

Had the same thing on my Summa T750 Pro, new rubber wheels cured problem. The engineer said it was due to a ‘flat’ on the wheels probably caused by vinyl going off and skidding the wheel, anyway new wheels cured problem instantly.

i’m sure rob’s covered it, however, i once had a roll that kept going off track, it turned out that the roll, or outer few metres of it, couldnt have been lined up end to end when it was slit, the result was that it kept going of track untill the first 4-5mtrs had been used,

if its just one roll doing ti id check this, if its all colours then just ignore me !
