  • can anyone tell me why i get browns turning to black?

Ok so here’s my first real post….

My first real job in and knowing from past experience a bit of a bugga!…have some sample graphics to produce…900 x 1250 and 1300 x1500….black and white gradient from top to bottom with a title along the top.

Here’s my issue…brown tint to the print!

Have been trying different options such as cmyk blend in illustrator…rgb…and pure black…photoshop greys…rgb…cmyk…added noise etc. Using Versaworks to rip and print been getting choppy results….spoke to Roland who suggested setting Density Control Only & Uni-directional which i’ve done but the blacks are coming out with a brownish tint….any pointers?

Kai in tech support sent me over a gradient using a spot colour black and still it prints out brown. Have tried a few different medias in the 540 and various media profiles to no avail.

Have printed out a Roland Colour System Library and that shows the greys with a brown tint also.

So running out of ideas here and I need to get this simple job out today. Is it possible that the Black ink is faulty or am I just missing something very simple?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards
    Stu

Are you REALLY printing it in MONOCHROME. (Black only) as if it’s ‘brown’ it sounds like it’s outputting in CMYK.

It’s an OUTPUT setting – will be in beside all of the speed / temp / dot size stuff in your RIP software as a profile / setting.

It won’t make any difference what you SEND to the RIP…it’s what the RIP outputs for the printer.

    Hi David,

Using Versaworks to print from and was told by Roland tech that setting the Density Control Only will force the machine to only use the black.

They also sent me a gradient made from a spot black and in versaworks to do a spot colour conversion…still a brown tint!

density control only will only use black for output if black is described in the input file. it also doesnt colour manage so results would be flakey to start.

the preserve primary colour option uses cms but will preserve pure CMYK.

try custom– adobe 1998rgb–euroscale coated cmyk–perceptual for raster
colorimetric for vector and experiment with preserve and use embeded profile.

if you send me the file i will test it here. what printer is it? i have access to all roland printers.

also the light source is critical with grey tints, try and view in as close to final placement light as possible.
