Okay i am creating a catalog book for items for selling. First time doing this i am just asking form suggestion in how to start.

I am thinking 8.5×11 layout and just keep creating new layers for each item topic, well that what i am thinking.

    My questions.

    1. Do u know any templates i can use just in case
    2. Do u know any tutorials i could use
    3. Just i just stop worrying a design like i design flyer and just keep creating new layers.

Basically i just want guidelines in how to create a catalog book. thx

i think for a catalogue or brochure, photoshop is not the correct program for the job.

maybe try Microsoft publisher or something similar that is easy to use and comes with templates for this type of thing

All brochures I create are done in photoshop,
Photoshop will do the job admirably, or corel draw, or Quark express if youhave £900 spare

The adobe program is Indesign, I make brochures in that… Photoshop is okay if you are good at it, just make sure the resolution is setup correctly when you start.

Microsoft Publisher can make brochures on a budget scale, its okay.

industry standard applications for doing such work were already mentioned, QuarkXPress 7 and Adobe InDesign. If you design in Microsoft Publisher you might be setting yourself up for additional fees come time to send the files to press, Publisher is good if you want to make a nice yard sale flyer or advertise your next fundraiser…other than that =/. Photoshop will do great layout work but it will not be a functional catalog so to speak. All resolutions must be 300ppi + for the best image quality.

That link has a lot of good ready to use templates for various software applications such as the ones listed above. Hope that helps.

Don’t overlook Corel Draw, as well as multipage ability (Illustrator can not do this without plugins) it also has imposition for putting pages in order and I’m not sure even Quark or Indesign can do that. You can also view the separations in the print preview to ensure everything is on the correct plate.

Quark & InDesign are made for doing jobs like what you are doing. They are standard in the magazine & newspaper business.

But it does not matter what program you use – The thing you need to ensure is that you use CMYK and that the Black is 100% black, not a mixture of all the colours. Your pressman will thank you.
If you need to check separations I have always just done it in Acrobat so I actually don’t know if you can do it in the newer versions of Quark & InDesign.
