  • can anyone recommend good colour design books?

Posted by Gary Lisko on 7 July 2011 at 04:22

I’ve been finding myself doing some reading lately (something I don’t do much of)

    Just finished Mastering Layouts
On the way: Logo Design for Small Business 1 & 2

I’m looking for a good book on color combos/rules, ect for Signs to have as a reference guide. Recommendations????

    Any other "must have" books?

It’s a little old now: Signwork Second Edition by Bill Stewart, ISBN 0-632-03365-7 Great for the basics from the old days.

Also check out: The Fundamentals of Typography, Ambrose/Harris, ISBN 10:2-940373-45-0

    and…

Los Logos, ISBN 3-931126-92-7 and Dos Logos, ISBN 3-89955-055-2

The last 2 are like bibles to me. Very useful when stuck for inspiration.

The very first logo design orientated for me was:
David Airey- logodesignlove- a good beginner book- it did wake up the hunger for more and since then I got plenty more, but the ones I come back to v often are:
    Los logos,
    Taschen logo design,
    Wheeler- designing brand identity
ALL OF Jim Krause index lines:
type idea index, layout index, colour index- those are handy, small and cheap -with good contents.
I usually go for a hunt on Amaz0n and read through all the reviews to get a good idea about a particular book, which often leads to a good related one or other recommended buy…

I recently subscribed to SignCraft as well, but got very busy with jobs and did not manage to explore it yet, however cannot wait to lay my eyes on it the first opportunity I get..

Oh, and in the logodesignlove one you’ll get an introduction into creative work-flow incorporating mind maps- a real eye opener for me… It might be obvious for someone who studied design, but if you are self though like me who’s there to tell you all the tricks? (answer a: – a fellow sign forum users! ) 🙂

Thank you for all the recommendations. I will gradually order down the list as I finish one to the next.

Don’t know much about signcraft, but have seen it on forums pretty often. I’ll have a look at that also.

Could someone shed some light on how signcraft works. Do I pick and choose individual issues? Are they sent out, or read online?

    Gary,

I went to the site, signed up and got a year subscription. Quite a good value for money.
I’m yet to explore the site, but there is a community, archive and pricing pages.
A magazine came through the post 2 weeks later.
Just flicked through so far- it is amazing how different a design ideas can be over the pond.

You can subscribe to either a hard copy being sent to your address or the digital version which is on line, and access restricted areas on the site, pricing guides and archives . I get the the hard copy version, but still with access to on line resources which is more expensive.

It’s just a magazine, it’s $39 a year, it’s tax-deductible, and comes with a free tiered pricing guide which is based on your shop’s hourly rate.
(so you learn not to charge $12 for a cut vinyl corosign like some of these yay-hoos around here)
There are also some free trade magazines, but they don’t talk about designing as much as SignCraft does.
    Sign Business
    Signs of the Times

Subscribed to signcraft today. Thanks for the names of the other magazines Jill – the more the merrier 🙂 Wont be charging $12 for signs lol, but hopefully signcraft’s price guide is different than sign contractors, their guide seems way high, that or I’m missing out.
