Can anyone recommend decent reasonably priced canvas
Posted by Martin Oxenham on 22 December 2010 at 22:05Can anyone recommend a decent reasonably priced canvas for use on roland machines. We have been using the stuff from Grafityp for quite a while as it prints excellent, but it seems so brittle and it cracks unless you mount it using a heat gun.
Now with the cold weather the stuff is a nightmare it cracks as soon as you look at it. Its kept in the same room as the printer so fairly warm, but it still cracks.:police: Mod-Edit

I have had no problems with printing or stretching the 330gsm and 380gsm cotton canvas from artbloc even in this cold weather, There are no doubt plenty of other places to buy something similar, but as it works well for me i have never had to look elsewhere.

why not just buy the finished article, no need to mount either 😉

I already have the frames and we print from the customers own photos mainly,
so once we’ve done the artwork it takes a few minutes to print so whats the point in farming it out ? -
sorry martin feeling a bit naughty i pay more than £8 /mt for my material i can’t find any better and its just been withdrawn because they can’t sell it.
just bought the last roll apparently. -

I only pay £2 a meter for my canvas, but then again I print with large format pigment printer with a CISS so even printed they are still less than £3 a meter. I have been printing and framing canvases for 5 years now and my production costs are less than £7 per print…. I have a roland eco sol printer too, but in the canvas market i cant justify paying that much for canvas so I do everything with the pigment printer…… never had a problem yet, perhaps you should look into getting a large format epson or something… of course I’m assuming that your roland is solvent based? If not our paying far too much for canvas.
18m roll of 380 gsm 100% cotton is about £45 (650mm)
18m Roll 0f 280 poly cotton mix (great for definition and texture) £38
18m roll 0f 230 gsm poly canvas (excellent high definition prints and easy to work with) £20-£25I do larger canvases but I have them printed for me and pay about £40 for a 68×44 inch print on poly cotton (these sell at £150+) so not really an issue
hope this helps

Mo, do you have any idea what is cheaper to print posters on, pigment or eco solvent printer?
I recently got a Roland eco solvent printer and now do all my poster prints on there even though I still have my Canon pigment printer, somebody told me it was cheaper to do on the pigment even thought the ink costs are nearly twice as much as eco solvent? Do you have any experience with this? I am trying to sell my pigment printer but would possibly keep it if I am throwing away money printing them on the Roland?
cheers

Warren, I don’t really do any printing as you know but I would have thought just looking around that your eco solvent printer would be a better option, from what I have seen not only are the inks cheaper but the media is cheaper as well as it doesn’t have to be coated.
I am guessing here but I would say that Mo is using dye based inks rather than pigment inks and as you know they are a lot cheaper.
Sure Mo will let you know anyway and he seems to be doing OK with his business so it must be working OK for him.
