  • can anyone offer some advise on a new jv3 purchase?

    Hi Folks,

Jaunuary sees my first foray in Digital Printing.

    I have just purchased a 48” 2 year old Rockhopper 1 for a very
reasonable sum, with EasySIGN sign making & RIP software thrown in.

The price was low because, as the seller ‘WARNED’ me, he had
some problems with it, but assured me ‘when it works it works well’
and that the last time it was running it was running perfectly.

He also told me that the Ink feeding system needed to be
upgraded, which through a bit of research on this board,
turns out to be the change from the Mutoh Eco-Solvent inks to the
    Eco-Solvent Ultra inks.

I know that the service engineer charges 150 euro call out.

    My questions are,

How much is the conversion estimated to cost?
    (don’t want to get burned)

Is the change compulsory because the Eco-Solvent inks will
    no-longer be available?
Or can I a least get printing using any last available Mutho Eco-Solvent inks?
As I don’t want to splash out on a conversion immediately after buying the machine. I also read this reply on another thread….

”you can use Bordeaux eco inks for Rockhopper without any change on your machine. Also FillInk is a good choice. We are printing on ORAFOL 640 with great results.”

Reading the threads on the Rockhoopers, it would appear they are
somewhat problematic, hopefully I haven’t got a lemon, and my
    gamble will pay off.

    Thanks, John.

And yes I Will be back with ‘Profile’ questions.

    EDIT:

I have just done a quick search on Bordeaux’s Mutoh Ink-Eco series..
    http://www.valuerite.com/wide_mutoh.html

It appears that they only come in 1 liter & 5 liter bottles.
I was advised this bottle feeding system would be more
cost effective before buying the machine.
I am wondering would it make more sense to get the kit to do
this (how much & can I fit it myself?) rather than make the conversion to
the Eco-Solvent Ultra inks? as I not to worried about brilliant
prints until I get more familiar with using the machine & software.

Lot of questions here I know, thanks for taking the time to read,
    any help appreciated.

    John,
Nice printers when they work. Mine been ok for a while.
    The upgrade is around £500.
I would suggest using only original inks and yes, last time I tried to order some of the Eco Solvent ink artsystems told me they were out.
Sorry mate, but you will need to upgrade very soon!

Like I said I have the rocky, but if I could go back I wouldn’t have bothered.
You Must make sure everything is always clean because the print head housing picks up all kinds of crap.

Other than that they do make a good place to hang your coat! :shoot3:

    John
i have a Rocky an its been as good as gold, 2 breakdowns in 2.5 years. The conversion involves a new set of inks & 2 pipes to be changed in all reality it should cost only the inks & the engineer. Mutoh was supplying the conversion pipes free with the first set of inks. You say that the machine can be problematic if you can elaborate i’m sure you find good help here on the boards to help resolve them.

I Have been told you cant fill the cartridges up when empty.
Been advised only to use cartridges and never bulk ink filling, as the machine is not designed to pull ink up from the bottles and through the pipes. This question was raised when artsystems came and did the upgrade.
