  • can anyone help with quick Windows/corel question please?

Posted by Nigel Fraser on January 4, 2005 at 9:21 am

Well one of the jobs i did over the break was to upgrade two of my pc’s to windows xp from 98se and it only took me three days to get it all up and running with the network and everything on 🙄
Anyway my question is that all the desktop icons that represent CorelDraw files are now showing little previews of the actual file contents and I don’t like it (it makes it difficult to see whats what on the desktop) so has anyone got an idea for making it like it was in win98 where corel files just have a single icon (hot air balloon?) for them ? Thanks in advance 😀

Hope this helps as I’m not sure what you mean

Is it actually on your desktop or do you mean when you go to open a file Nigel? What version of CorelDRAW are you using?

It’s the Corel Draw Icons on the desktop and anywhere else too if you look in explorer etc which are shown as little versions of the file itself (thumbnails rather than icons). I’m using corel12 – there must be a way to switch this feature off ??! Is is a corel thing or a windows xp thing ?
    Help !

    Nigel,

Can you not just right click on the folder, go to properties and change icon? If that’s what you mean 😀

I can’t find anything in this blimming thing 👿 I think its something to do with file associations Nigel, I think you can set a global option for the type of icon to use, but I just can’t find it in XP 🙄

I’m no help at all then :lol1:

Nigel, in my start menu, under corel applications/graphics applications, I have “uninstall thumbnail display.” That’ll be it. Probably.

Aha that sounds like the thing I thought !! then I looked and found it’s not on my version 🙄 What version of Corel/Windows do you use andy ? cos I looked at my old ver10 win98 machine and it’s not on that one either. I’m getting pee’d of now with xp already !
Debbee, if I go to change the view preferences in a window to “tile”, “icon” or “thumbnails” it does the same thing but just adjusts the size of the preview pictures !

    Nigel,

Still not sure this is what you’re after but I didn’t mean change the view preferences. If you want to change an icon(s) on the desktop – right click on the icon (or folder displaying the small images of its contents) go to the properties at the bottom of the drop down list. You will then see the facility to change the icon. You can follow the path to your Corel folder in program files where the Corel icons “should” be. Hope this helps and sorry if it doesn’t lol.

At least I know I’m not alone now 😀 – thanks Chris !
I’m sure it’s a corel12 feature where it reads the file and generates a thumbnail which it then passes to windows to use as an icon for the file. I just can’t find any reference to it in the help files though (hot)
Debbee, I know what you mean but I’m after a more global change that will stop the thumbnails showing for every corel file rather than just an individual, if that makes any sense (chat.)
If anyone finds out please let me(us) know !

    Hi Nigel

This may not be much help….but have you tried re-installing the Corel programs. I’m running a Sony laptop with XP and CorelDraw 12 on it with no problems…also in our unit we use Windows 2000 and CorelDraw 12, again with no problems like you have got.

At present, thats about the only help I can give.

    Sorry it’s not more.
    Regards

Lee, thanks for the idea but I’ve got the same issue on two pc’s and a laptop 😕 I wouldn’t call it a “problem” really, it’s just a feature I don’t really want !
    thanks anyway, Nigel

Well perseverance pays off and at last I’ve found the answer :dance1:

If anyones interested this is how you change the icons from previews to nice little “pencil” logos !!

To remove the thumbnail display, do the following:

    1. Go to the Add\Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
    2. Select CorelDRAW 12, then highlight Change.
    3. Select Modify and click Next.
    4. Click the plus sign beside Utilities.
    5. Click the down arrow beside Thumbnail Display (CDR/CPT) and choose ‘This feature will not be available’.
    6. Click Install.
    7. Click Finish.

Thanks for your suggestions anyway 😉

An even easier solution is to browse to the following directory on your HD:

    X:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Graphics 12\Programs
Double-click unregico.exe and the thumbnail display disappears.

Sorry I didn’t see this post sooner.

    Cheers!

It’s a save option, in v12 at least. When you save your file it asks what file size of thumbnail you want to create, select ‘none’ from the drop down box.

Regards your existing files, save them as new files with the same file name and replace existing file.

That should remedy the problem without disabling the option.
