can anyone help with mystery grenadier problem please?
Posted by DAVID FRITH on 17 July 2007 at 14:04CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH THE FOLLOWING PROBLEM.
WE RUN A GRENADIER SP1700 PRINT ONLY MACHINE.
WE HAVE NEVER BEEN SATISFIED WITH THE LEVEL OF SERVICE OR BACK UP FROM B&P WHO SOLD US THE PRINTER. WE RECENTLY HAD A PROBLEM WITH A GHOST IMAGE WHEN PRINTING BI DIRECTIONALLY, WE ENDED UP HAVING TO GET AN INDEPENDENT SERVICE ENGINEER TO LOOK AT THE MACHINE. HE MADE SOME ADJUSTMENTS AND LEFT. ON RETURNING TO WORK THE FOLLOWING DAY WE HAD A GREAT POOL OF INK OVER THE FLOOR AND ALL OF THE INK CARTRIDGES WERE EMPTY.
THE ENGINEER RETURNED AND SHORTENED THE PIPES FROM THE PUMPS SAYING THAT THE SYSTEM WAS SIPHONING. HE LEFT AGAIN BUT THE FAULT REMAINS. I HAVE NOW HAD TO MAKE A CRADLE TO HOLD 6 INK BOTTLES BELOW THE CAPPING STATION SO THAT EACH PIPE CAN BE DIRECTED TO ITS OWN BOTTLE ALLOWING US TO RECYCLE THE INK. THE PROBLEM OCCURS PREDOMINANTLY WITH THE LIGHT CYAN AND LIGHT MAGENTA ALTHOUGH SOMETIMES IT CAN BE THE YELLOW OR THE MAGENTA VERY RARELY IS IT BLACK OR CYAN. IT CAN BE ONE OR ALL AT THE SAME TIME.
PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN.Chris Wool replied 18 years, 4 months ago 4 Members · 13 Replies -

are you still under warranty?
do you have a maintenance contract with B&P?
Are you using genuine inks? i.e. activasol? -
UNFORTUNATELY OUT OF WARRANTY AND COULD NOT SEE THE POINT OF PAYING FOR AN EXTENDED MAINTENANCE CONTRACT WHEN WE COULD NOT GET A RESPONSE UNDER THE WARRANTY. WE ARE USING GENUINE INKS IN BULK FEED CARTRIDGES SUPPLIED BY PRINT MAX.

i have a grenadier too and i have to agree that I’m not thrilled by the level of tech support i have had in a while.
however, i have heard it has been the result in the loss of some members of the support staff coupled by the vast amount of machines they have saturated the market with. in other words they are stretched to the max!
anyway… "that’s not your or my concern, if we pay for a service we expect to get it regardless".
with regards to your problem and having to use an independent technician to fix your machine, i would say that is obviously a result of you being out of warranty with B&P…
what i would say though is… If you have paid the independent technician to fix the machine, why hasn’t he?
Is he saying it cannot be fixed? -
the independent tech is saying that he can not find a reason that would cause the ink to randomly drain as it is doing and that basically is the question i am asking. has any one else experienced the same or is there an obvious cause.

just my tuppence worth, normally the cause of ink draining is that the capping station sponges have swollen & at times contact the head creating a joint between the head & the capping station allowing a siphoning action to occur. I would change the capping stations, they should be changed on a minimum of a year cycle anyway. If you are lucky you would have curred the fault yourself. Are you running bulk ink system or a top up system if so ink levels can cause a similar problem. The ghosting sounds as if it was just a case of adjustment this again is something you can do & should ideally be done for all media types. However if the last engineer moved the heads to cure the ghost image it may well be that the heads are now touching the sponges for that reason. I’m presuming yours has 6 heads the same has mine cost for all capping stations is about £180.It is curious that this problem started after the engineer corrected the ghosting fault do you actually know what he did?

Prior to the engineers visit we did the usual alignment checks and adjustments to no avail. when the engineer came he accessed a special menu via the printer control panel. he got the machine to calibrate itself somehow. he also reset the height of the capping stations so strange that you indicate the closeness of the sponges as being a possible cause. he made this adjustment again via the engineers menu which i cannot access. I am using a bulk system but because of the problem i keep the ink level fairly low as i had thought that the pressure from the volume of ink may well have a bearing on the problem.
I suppose on the plus side i should say that we do not get any nozzle blocking using my home made constant loss system.
i am thinking about extending the pipes back to the cartridges so that i have a complete circulatory system.

i’ll have a read up in the service manual to see what adjustments he possibly made, sometimes you can’t rely on the auto calibration as its only as good as the sensors that run it. Just to confirm your machine is the same as the Soljet 2Kev

I was told by the engineer that the machine is the same as an SJ645ex but I am not sure. I didn’t even get the proper manual from B&P, the one they gave me was for an SP1400.
To try to help you identify it the machine has 12 cartridges, it will accept media up to 1600mm plus a bit. there is no plotter cutter on it but there is a sheet off cutter.
cheers Dave

david i think kevin is on the case here.
but where did this engineer come from.
you can say he might even be reading thischris

David
sounds like it is the SJ645 Soljet 2, have you ever had new capping stations on it, if not i would try them. As i said i’ll have alook in the manual for youKev

Kev
I have not had new capping stations but will give them a go. I look forward to hearing from you with any other information you can glean from the manual (is this a product manual or an engineers manual, if it is an engineers manual is it possible to get hold of a copy)
many thanks for your time up to now.

The engineer was recommended to me by one of my other suppliers, I don’t think it would be proper of me to mention his name or give any clues as to his identity. All I would say is that he appears to be a good bloke, he certainly knows his way around the hidden menu on the printer and during discussions with him I have learned that he undertakes work for many of the main suppliers for most makes of printer. As I have told Kevin I will replace the capping stations. (can you recommend a supplier)
Please continue to watch this topic as all input and comment is valued

my distaste is that you have been left searching for a answer when the engineer has left the machine in a poorer state and has not offered to fix it. his fault or not dont care the fact is its not fixed.
sorry if i have misunderstood anything
Chris
i run and care for a roland sc540ex and i am appalled at the level of service that some people seem to receive.
whilst under warranty roland were superb to me.
