  • can anyone help with layout for a lightbox?

Posted by Lorraine Clinch on 6 October 2005 at 10:41

    Hi all

I have had this brewing for a while, awaiting planning permission for 2 lightboxes on to a Chinese Restaurant. The smaller is not a problem, but the large one (see attatched) I can’t seem to improve on.

The customer speaks almost no English, and when we talk about ‘writing’ and ‘lighting’ it is almost farcical!

As the space is long and narrow, I am stumped as to what else I can do!

He is limited to a budget of £425 for this one sign, I really would appreciate any ideas (I don’t expect designing, but some ideas would be great)

    Thanks in advance

    Lorraine

    Here ya go Lorraine.
    I don’t do many lightboxes.
    My colors are probably off.
I think your design needs more contrast tho.
I try to stay away from University Roman, altho clients love it.
I think it is too thin and hard to read.
I used Belwe for my additions.
Dunno if that’s the proper way to put a phone number over there!
    But I panelized the copy.
    Love….Jill

Jill, thank you-more than I had hoped for! I would not have thought to split the colours, as I haven’t done a light-box before. Certainly given me a boost 😀

Before you go ahead, Big G did a fantastic demo on a special effect you could do with light boxes.

I can’t find it at the mo because of the work that is being done to the forum.

Lorraine are you going to be doing this with translucent vinyl? Reason I ask is because it should be done that way if you are going to do something like Jills option but that is going to increase the cost of the box, don’t know what size it is but £425 insnt a lot for any lightbox, I’m assuming the £425 is to supply and fit.
You are probably going to have to charge the customer the full price for the translucent rather than just what you use as you could end up with a few metres of translucent in different colours that dont get used for a long time.

Hi Paul, i’ve done a search, but as you found, not availableat the mo.

Martin, I am planning to use translucent, and I can buy by the metre, from my local supplier so should not be too expensive. I’ve already deducted the cost of the electrician’s estimate, so I’m hoping that I won’t be too way out.
(The box is to be 100″ x 24″ by the way)
    Thanks

No I didn’t. The bloke didn’t want to buy it so the sign never got made. I will do a demo of it if anyone is interested.

    Is that enough grovelling?

As usual super input Jill, nice design, should maybe have adivised customer that colours could change, why not deep blue for the end panels instead of black just a thought

Still love your pictures Jill 😮
